Publisher's Summary

It’s day one of Darren Corliss’ career as a detective, and not only has he been assigned a notoriously difficult partner, but the guy might also be a pill-popping dirty cop. Internal Affairs needs proof, and Darren gets to be their eyes and ears whether he wants to or not.

Detective Andreas Ruffner doesn’t play by the rules, and he doesn’t play well with others. With bodies piling up and a list of suspects who are way above his pay grade, the last thing he needs is a wet-behind-the-ears kid for a partner. Or babysitter. Not even if that partner is easy on the eyes.

As Darren gains Andreas’ hard-won trust, they both realize there’s more than just mutual suspicion simmering beneath the surface. But their investigation is heating up as quickly as their relationship, and Darren has no choice but to go along with Andreas’ unorthodox - and borderline unethical - methods. As IA puts the squeeze on Darren to give up the man he’s falling for, he has to wonder - is Andreas the only cop left in this town who isn’t dirty?

Not My Favourite

I had so many internal complaints while trying to get through this book. I struggled forward, thinking that I'd eventually figure out what it was that bothered me so much, and then I realized that I'd read a book by one of these authors before. I looked at my review, and it perfectly described what I was feeling here:

"The worst of it all was the romance. Honestly, I could have dealt with the [boring procedural] and [sluggish] pacing if there was a slow burning simmer of sexual tension building to keep me interested, but the glacial pace that this author took made me find it difficult to see any chemistry between our heroes at all. Sure, their partnership seemed genuine, but I didn't believe that they were falling in love. The sex, itself, was disappointing, because there was no build-up. It seemed to me like they did it out of a sense of convenience--we're both here in this room, both conveniently "hot" guys and horny, let's do it! *Ugh!* So frustrating when something that should read as so climactic ends up being such a dud. Also, why couldn't our author come up with any other descriptive words to describe these two, other than "hot"? After their first meeting, I genuinely forgot what they looked like, and found everything difficult to imagine. "Hot" simply isn't a good enough descriptor..."

Additionally, for a book that was so clearly supposed to be suspenseful to not have any suspense, I was highly disappointed. I didn't FEEL anything, very likely because the characters didn't feel much, either. There were no nerves, no creeping tingle at the back of their neck, no descriptors at all that would let the author feel what the characters are feeling.

The narration was good; he definitely did his best to change the voices for the characters, and did a few different accents for side characters.

I liked the plot *idea* here, but was sadly disappointed. I'm heartened to see, however, that there are tons of people that enjoyed the book! Alas, don't take my opinion on it, give it a read for yourself; you might find it to your liking!
