Publisher's Summary

In her now classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon told the story of Claire Randall, an English ex-combat nurse who walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands in 1946, and disappears… into 1743. The story unfolded from there in seven best-selling novels, and CNN has called it "a grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries]." Now the story continues in Written in My Own Heart's Blood.

It is 1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington's troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife; his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is; and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie's wife, Claire, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in 20th-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family's secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy - never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

Written in My Own Heart's Blood is the brilliant next chapter in a masterpiece of the imagination unlike any other.

Featured Article: The Best Female Narrators You Can Listen To All Day

When considering a new audiobook, one of the biggest questions listeners have is whether they’ll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable as audiobooks span at least a few hours, and sticking with one person’s voice for that period can feel like a big commitment. Luckily, there are so many excellent voice actors performing audiobooks that you might just find yourself gravitating to certain audiobooks based solely on the narrator’s strength.

Amazing as usual!

I love the detail that Diana uses to describe the characters and the scenery with. She makes you feel as if you are there experiencing everything with the characters. You love and hate and fear and worry along with your ‘friends’. Davina Porter helps bring it all to life as well!

Flowing marvellously

From Diana Gabaldon's splendid pen to Davina Porter's always impeccable narration, it was impossible for me not to be completely drawn into this timeless story of family, love, war, hate, conflict, redemption, action. In short, everything which makes every single one of these books a complete (in every sense of the word, from the story to the impeccable research) tale. I laughed, I feared, I cried. I was transported simultaneously to the War of Independence, to the 1980s Scotland, to North Carolina, to Scotland, and all with as much gusto as always. Worth the read and the listen!

Highly addictive to listen to

Great performance and use of different accents for the different characters. Lovely flow to the story when being read. Like her other books... very addictive.

A visit with friends

At this point, I've been reading the Outlander series for 24 years. My daughter is named "Claire", after the strong, intelligent, capable, and loving Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser. This most recent book includes brushes with fame (Washington & Nathaniel Greene), historic turning points (The Battle of Monmouth), and a poignant but brief reunion. The last paragraph will entirely explain why readers constantly ask Diana Gabaldon when book 9 will be published.

Written In My Own Heart's Blood by Diana Gabaldon

#Audible1 As with all the books by Diana Gabaldon in the Outlander series - the end of this novel was met with regret that there was not more to read! Fortunately, I know there will be another novel, but the wait will be part anticipation and part frustration that knowing that this much story will take time. The love story and adventures of Clare Randall Fraser and James Fraser, as well as their extended family and friends is engrossing as I become immersed in the interplay of relationships set against the backdrop of the American Revolution and the changes in society during both the 18th century and the 1960s. I have read the books in written format, and now have thoroughly enjoyed the audible performance by Davinia Porter for each book in the Outlander series. Her ability to inhabit the persona's of each character is amazing as she brings the story to life in an entirely different format. The story this time around is a roller coaster of emotions from anxiety for beloved characters and relief to happy resolutions for some, with tears and laughter - and as always I learn so much from the highly researched facts that form the basis of the characters daily lives. I recommend the book and series.
