Publisher's Summary
Before then her bedroom was a dark, windowless cellar, her activities confined to cooking and cleaning. She'd grown used to being maltreated by the Songoli family - to being a slave. She's never been outside, doesn't know how to read or write, and cannot speak English. At least that's what the Songolis believe. But Muna is far cleverer - and her plans more terrifying - than the Songolis or anyone else can ever imagine....

Intense subject matter
Minette Walters has often tackled the ugly side of human behaviour but this one was irredeemably dark. I’m not sure I will take a chance on another though Scold’s Bridle will always be a favourite

Excellent story!
The narrator, Eyre Justine, is absolutely amazing! She infuses these characters with life and intent. While none turn out to be good people -- except Mrs. Hughes -- all, for at least a few moments, were worthy of sympathy. Minette Walters never disappoints and her narrators are always top-notch!
