Publisher's Summary

Do you sometimes feel as if you're just going through the motions in life? Are you good at looking and acting as if you're fine, but secretly feel lonely and disconnected? If so, you are not alone. The world is full of people who have an innate sense that something is wrong with them - who feel they live on the outside looking in, but have no explanation for this feeling and no way to put it into words.

If you are one of these people, you may fear that you are not connected enough to your spouse, or that you don't feel pleasure or love as profoundly as others do. You may drink too much, or eat too much, or risk too much, in an attempt to feel something good.

Running on Empty will give you clear strategies for how to heal, and offers a special chapter for mental-health professionals. In the world of human suffering, this book is an emotional smart bomb meant to eradicate the effects of an invisible enemy.

Enlightening!

While I find some of what the author wrote about to be problematic, I am so thankful I found out about her and the concept of childhood emotional neglect. It perfectly explains why I’ve struggled for so long and not been able to pin point any ONE reason for my problems: “I guess I’m just crazy and needy and annoying.”

I’ve done a lot of healing since hearing her interview on The Mental Illness Happy Hour (I bought this audiobook after hearing it). This is DEFINITELY worth a listen to if you suspect you may have experienced emotional neglect (you probably did...)

Confused? Don’t Understand Your Triggers?

Loved how she broke down each parental style and how it plays out in their adult kids. Voices in your head and why you do what you do, normally stems from how you were parent.

If parents didn’t get proper emotional support 2 process their childhood emotions, many will end up parenting the same way

Emotional dysfunction and dysregulation is common and finding the root cause will put you on a healing path.

Ultimately you are in control of your healing as many parents learned on the job and we cannot blame them or turn back the hands of time to change their parenting style

This book also discusses strategies on how to become more emotional resilient

Highly recommend this book 📖 4 those trying 2 understand their own emotions

great book

I learned more about myself than I was expecting. As a parent I can see how the things I don't do are just as impact full as the things I do.

AMAZING content. The narrator wasn't that great.

AMAZING content. The narrator wasn't that great. She has a very nice voice but the cadence was too staccato.

Very insightful have yet to read anything on topic

I saw myself in this book, it was very revealing for me and helped my understand why i am the way i am and what my upbringing had to do with it. Recommend it to anyone who may have been emotionally neglected as a child.

Everyone knows someone for which this is relevant

It was a great listen. Provided insights that I have heard nowhere else. Truly a revelation in how Our minds are shaped by our emotional experiences or lack thereof. Worth a listen to learn a lot.

Very insightful

Helps give us clues to ourselves and others. Probably worth reading a few more times to get more out of it.

The narrators voice really is like listening to Siri lol

The content of the book itself was great and useful. But I had a really hard time focusing on it because of the narrator’s voice. Probably would have been better to read this one rather than listen.

Insightful and practical (esp. to parents)

I really appreciated this book! It gave great examples of people who may have suffered emotional neglect as a child, the consequences, and lots of examples of what they could do to overcome some of the consequences. Though I was listening with someone else other than myself in mind, I found practical advice and exercises for myself as well. I also found the information in the book really applicable and helpful for raising kids.
I agree with other reviews that the woman reading was quite monotone but I didn’t think it effected the overall experience much.
