Was your mother preoccupied, distant, or even demeaning? Have you struggled with relationships - or with your own self-worth? Often, the grown children of emotionally absent mothers can't quite put a finger on what's missing from their lives. The children of abusive mothers, by contrast, may recognize the abuse - but overlook its lasting, harmful effects. Psychotherapist Jasmin Lee Cori has helped thousands of men and women heal the hidden wounds left by every kind of undermothering.

The emotional trauma we suffer as children not only shapes our emotional lives as adults but also affects our physical health and overall well-being. Scientists now know on a biochemical level exactly how parents' chronic fights, divorce, death in the family, being bullied or hazed, and growing up with a hypercritical, alcoholic, or mentally ill parent can leave permanent, physical "fingerprints" on our brains.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

A tender, powerful, and achievable path to the everyday resiliency we all need to navigate the uncertainty in our lives. An inspiring new voice in resiliency, Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe believes that our modern conception of resiliency as “fighting” or being “tougher” is misguided. Learning happens when we are able to trust and feel safe; fear and shame are barriers, not facilitators, for authentic growth, acceptance, and change. Dr. Robyne maps out a kinder approach to taking on the challenges of life and developing authentic self-alignment and balance.

It's not you; it's your schedule. Does it sound like magic? It's not. We've all heard of circadian rhythms - those biological processes that give us jet lag and make us night owls or early birds. But few of us know just how profoundly these diurnal patterns affect our overall health. Bad habits - like skipping meals, squeezing in workouts, working late into the night and then trying to catch up on sleep during the weekend - disrupt our natural cycles. A growing body of research on chronobiology reveals just how sensitive the human body is to these rhythms all the way down to the genetic level.

Now Say This guides parents through a highly practical three-step approach to effectively communicating with children called ALP. It also discusses the power of words in all of our daily conversations. Each chapter addresses a different aspect of parenting and includes actual scripts and precise language for parents to use to set limits with empathy and to use conversations as opportunities for learning. Language is powerful, and the exact words, tone, and nonverbal communication parents use when trying to move through a sticky moment with their child means everything.

Description
Do you sometimes feel as if you're just going through the motions in life? Are you good at looking and acting as if you're fine, but secretly feel lonely and disconnected? If so, you are not alone. The world is full of people who have an innate sense that something is wrong with them - who feel they live on the outside looking in, but have no explanation for this feeling and no way to put it into words.
If you are one of these people, you may fear that you are not connected enough to your spouse, or that you don't feel pleasure or love as profoundly as others do. You may drink too much, or eat too much, or risk too much, in an attempt to feel something good.
Running on Empty will give you clear strategies for how to heal, and offers a special chapter for mental-health professionals. In the world of human suffering, this book is an emotional smart bomb meant to eradicate the effects of an invisible enemy.

Robotic slow narrator, good content
It was difficult to focus on the content of the book in the beginning since the narration was slow and robotic with odd intonation and emphasis. It sounded like having my GPS read me a book. My daughter was convinced the voice was not human. I speeded it up by 25% since the reading was too slow which made the book only just over 6 hours in length, speeding it up make it more bearable.
The content was quite good. The caption "Overcoming your CEN" is a bit misleading though since the 'overcoming' part was only a very small portion of the book.
Apart from all that the content was interesting and I am glad I chose this book.

The content of the book itself was great and useful. But I had a really hard time focusing on it because of the narrator’s voice. Probably would have been better to read this one rather than listen.

Confused? Don’t Understand Your Triggers?
Loved how she broke down each parental style and how it plays out in their adult kids. Voices in your head and why you do what you do, normally stems from how you were parent.
If parents didn’t get proper emotional support 2 process their childhood emotions, many will end up parenting the same way
Emotional dysfunction and dysregulation is common and finding the root cause will put you on a healing path.
Ultimately you are in control of your healing as many parents learned on the job and we cannot blame them or turn back the hands of time to change their parenting style
This book also discusses strategies on how to become more emotional resilient
Highly recommend this book 📖 4 those trying 2 understand their own emotions

Insightful and practical (esp. to parents)
I really appreciated this book! It gave great examples of people who may have suffered emotional neglect as a child, the consequences, and lots of examples of what they could do to overcome some of the consequences. Though I was listening with someone else other than myself in mind, I found practical advice and exercises for myself as well. I also found the information in the book really applicable and helpful for raising kids.
I agree with other reviews that the woman reading was quite monotone but I didn’t think it effected the overall experience much.

Easy to understand but became a bit redundant
Good observations, particularly that emotionally neglectful parents are not necessarily bad parents but that the later consequences can manifest in many ways
