Histoire
The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.

Description
From number-one New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult comes a compelling and disturbing novel about a prep school teacher accused of rape by a group of young girls, the woman who stands by him, and the repercussions of the case in a small New England town where the past is only a heartbeat away.
Love can redeem a man...but secrets and lies can condemn him.
A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past: Once a teacher at a girls' prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart. But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets - and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegation.
Now, at the center of a modern-day witch hunt, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers, to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him.

JP rarely disappoints
A intriguing and disturbing story. How teenage fantasies can evolve into nightmares and destroy others. How helicopter parents wear blinders. How coaches are beyond influential in overachieving, athletic girls.
Although, I suspected early on of the real devil (actually two) in this story (if you listen, I hope you hear the warning bells too!).
I was hoping that the worst devil would have been publicly revealed. But you won’t know him until you listen to the last 90 seconds of this story …

Good story
I have yet to read or listen to a Jodi Picoult that isn’t good. I kinda feel like the narration didn’t age well with this book. Why did the two women of colour, the investigator and the judge, have southern accents? No one else in the book did as it takes place in New Hampshire. There ARE black women jn New Hampshire so it just felt a bit like racial profiling by the narrator.

I don’t know if I missed it, but did they explain the semen on Jilly’s leg? I suspected her father of assault, but how did the results line up so closely with Jack? I also wish that they brought up Jack’s attack again. It seems like there were a few loose ends.
So between that and the narrator, I have to give it a 4 overall. Worth the read for sure.
