Publisher's Summary

Zoey Daniels has been tossed from foster home to foster home, where she grows up fast and tough. When she is placed in her "last chance" home, she finds a reason to stay and turn her life around: her foster sister, Lexie, who is paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair.

After high school, Zoey is hired by a special government agency, the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG), where she meets the other reason to remain: Daniel, her coworker. The man she loves. But there is something unique about Zoey. She can see fae. Because of this, the DMG hires her to work as a Collector: catching, researching, testing, and using the fae to save human lives. The work never registers on her sympathy radar. She was raised to think of fae as beasts that feed on humans and want to destroy them.

When devastation hits Seattle, Zoey's whole world is turned upside down. The electric storm connects her to a ruthless fae, a Wanderer named Ryker, whose dealings expose them to even more trouble and danger. They embark on a journey, running and hiding from both the government and fae, both of which threaten their lives and those they love.

A great new series

So far so good, I’m always hesitant starting a new series because it’s a big commitment of time but I’m loving it so far.

I’ve read lots of fantasy books but nothing like this it’s very unique.

She grew up in foster care and works for a top secret government agency that finds fae and either experiments on them or kills them.

She thinks she’s working for the good guys but later discovered differently.

This book is almost post apocalyptic in the style because of a crazy electric storm that destroyed most of the city with no electricity or water people do whatever they can to get by.

There’s an adorable little sprite who brings so much light and laughter to the book. And a big sexy Vikings looking fae who has to stay with her in order to try to get his powers back (they were transferred from him to her during the storm)

There’s hot sexual tension & enemies to lovers trope. Lots of adventure & some action.

Not for me I guess

I struggle with fantasies in modern settings in the first place, but this has very little fantasy in it. You could edit the tiny bit of it out and very little would change about the story. It felt like bad fanfiction. The FMC was annoying and not smart (didn’t know test tube babies still are physically birthed and have birthdays?? Like what??). So many opportunities to do cool things with different fae and magic systems but instead it was about every kind of childhood trauma under the sun, SA, the gruesome death of a disabled family member, gang violence and a talking narcoleptic monkey? Almost DNFed several times but held out hope it’d get better.

DNF

I could not finish this book and I’m like 10 chapters in. The storyline itself is maybe fine but the main character is super annoying weird very cringe things happen.

But I think what really killed it for me is the narrators attempt to do some little monkey sprite, things, voice, and it is possibly the most annoying thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

Unfortunately, I see why this book was free, but I wouldn’t waste my time with it.
