Publisher's Summary

Dark forces have extended Edward Wright an offer of incredible power at a terrible cost...and Edward has chosen to make them regret it.

When Edward is swept into the world of Ivalis as a Dungeon Lord, the Dark's most powerful servant, he has no servitude in mind. He'll oppose the evil plans of the Dark god, Murmur, whatever it takes.

Through only his wits and his guts to help him survive a weakened arrival, Edward must rise to power if he is to earn the right to live another day. But in the battle between Dark and Light, what can Edward choose if both sides are cruel, uncaring monsters? Cold gods laugh in the distant world of Ivalis. Heroes chase after power and experience, while Kings send their armies to their deaths in the name of the Dark and the Light.

But no one expects the rise of the Dungeon Lord.... And in the world of Ivalis, maybe a single man can forge his own path.

With the One Man Theater himself at the helm, joined by the sensational Annie Ellicott as two of the most disturbing monsters ever produced by Soundbooth Theater, we hope you never forget this horrifying LitRPG experience.

Wouldn’t recommend, wouldn’t listen to again, but overall a good story.

I would not recommend this book to myself after having listened to it, but now that I’ve gotten through the first I am probably going to get the second...
The story did pick up after about chapter 18, up until then I was listening to this book believing I was going to be disappointed with it overall but in the end the story has left me curious about what will happen next. So that is definitely a plus.
While not focusing on stats too much (this is largely a story about someone with low stats finding creative ways to make himself more dangerous) it sure dives into stats DEEP when it does, which can make it pretty boring. If the listener doesn’t care about the stats because you aren’t making stats a big deal, then maybe don’t describe them like you’re reading the drop down sub-text...

There were a number of things in this book which annoyed me greatly, one of them being the main characters voice. Jeff Hayes does a great job in every book I’ve listened to which he narrates, a top performer for sure. This is why I’m led to believe the author had some input as to why the main character sounds like his chest is puffed out every time he says something. It’s as though someone asked Jeff to make the MC sound as predictably “hero” as he could. It leaves no room for dynamic or emotion in the character’s voice. There are some moments where you can hear Jeff slip into a more casual speaking candour, which is refreshing, before he corrects himself.
And then there are choices characters make.....
SPOILERS.
Don’t read further if you want to read this book.
The sheriff is aware that the inquisition will murder the town and even surrounding areas because of the threat of the bane. So if someone could please explain to me why when he sees the spiders -who he recognizes have the ability to smell the bane- killing towns folk and hunting the bane, why... does he decide to protect the people and attack the spiders when he has admitted that it’s his duty to tell the inquisition about the bane, therefore killing the townsfolk anyway? His character is the definition of a white knight to the point of getting in his own way.
The ranger who brought the bane didn’t seem to have a very convincing reason for doing so either. Kind of seemed like a rushed explanation of why things started.
The MC does a fairly good job of explaining that he doesn’t mean harm to anyone, and has the means to suss out the bane as their own world’s magic’s objectivity, yet no one trusts him even after he’s demonstrated its ability to do just that?

The story is well done and the voice actors do a fantastic job of bringing everything to life.

can't recommend to peole who listen with headphone

who ever was in charge of the audio production made an alright book complete unrecommendable. the parts were it goes from normal talking to very loud high pitch screaming is just painful. their are part that have audio echo and o can't tell if this was on purpose or and just a poor audio recording. it come across as the latter. the story itself was alright. good but nothing new. I like how it wasn't skillsheet heavy like some books.

I'm getting book 2 now.

Now, I'm no tween either, but the adult scene in this was both unexpected and felt natural, especially since it obviously wasn't a focus of this story.

The abject horror of some of these creatures made my skin crawl; the ambiance of the performance drew me in to make it feel more real. There were points in the story where the MC had felt a shiver down their backs, and I also felt one too right before it was mentioned in the story.

First chapter was hard to get through, only because I kept yelling at the MC to lay down a harassment lawsuit against his boss. I'm glad he didn't, for we wouldn't get to read his story if he did. Or maybe we would, but it would show up as an episode of a TV drama starring some slick lawyers and would read very differently.

The world that was built here is something that I can easily see myself trying to dig up all the lore I can later on and I'm happy to see this was only book 1 of a series.

Good, but the spider queen gave me a headaches

Everything was fine except for the weird and very very loud spider noises in the background when the queen is talking. It was funny at first but got irritating quick. maybe just half the volume on that.
