Publisher's Summary

In John Scalzi's re-imagining of H. Beam Piper's 1962 sci-fi classic Little Fuzzy, written with the full cooperation of the Piper Estate, Jack Holloway works alone for reasons he doesn't care to talk about. On the distant planet Zarathustra, Jack is content as an independent contractor for ZaraCorp, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, that's not up for discussion.

Then, in the wake of an accidental cliff collapse, Jack discovers a seam of unimaginably valuable jewels, to which he manages to lay legal claim just as ZaraCorp is cancelling their contract with him for his part in causing the collapse. Briefly in the catbird seat, legally speaking, Jack pressures ZaraCorp into recognizing his claim, and cuts them in as partners to help extract the wealth.

But there's another wrinkle to ZaraCorp's relationship with the planet Zarathustra. Their entire legal right to exploit the verdant Earth-like planet, the basis of the wealth they derive from extracting its resources, is based on being able to certify to the authorities on Earth that Zarathustra is home to no sentient species. Then a small furry biped - trusting, appealing, and ridiculously cute - shows up at Jack's outback home. Followed by its family. As it dawns on Jack that despite their stature, these are people, he begins to suspect that ZaraCorp's claim to a planet's worth of wealth is very flimsy indeed and that ZaraCorp may stop at nothing to eliminate the fuzzys before their existence becomes more widely known.

What the critics say

  • Audie Award Winner, Science Fiction, 2012
“[Scalzi’s] style and skill make it a highly entertaining read. It succeeds both as a new novel from a talented writer and as a tribute and gateway to Piper’s work.” ( Wired)
"It’s a wonderful book.... [T]he way that Scalzi puts that wonderful novel of Piper’s into a fresher context is cynically lovely.... Year’s best? Yeah, one of them." ( The San Diego Union-Tribune)
“A perfectly executed plot clicks its way to a stunning courtroom showdown in a cathartic finish that will thrill Fuzzy fans old and new.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Enjoyable and Entertaining

I really like Fuzzy Nation. Wil did a great job at narration and different voices. The story itself was engaging, funny at times and very interesting. I only listen when I drive my car and I love when a book makes me look forward to hopping Behind the wheel and this book did that for me.

I got more than I bargained for...

I didn't expect much from what was for me an unknown author. If Wil
Wheaton wasn't listed as the narrator, I probably would have passed it by.

The narration was done beautifully. The surprise for me was to discover a new si-fi author to follow. Any author who can make me laugh out loud, cry like a baby and hope the book never ends has got what I am looking for.

Great Book

I really enjoyed this book I was a huge fan of the original books and to have the books updated and made more appropriate for a modern audience was a fabulous find. I love this story of small creatures that are at first being ignored and even killed. Eventually they find a voice in an unlikely source and begin to fight back with surprising results. Well done.

Simply blown away!

I bought this mainly because it was the deal of the day, cheap and sounded funny. I am so very happy I did. The story was fantastic and Will Wheaton brought life to every character. I laughed and shed a few tears. I don't think I can say enough good about it. *added after 3rd listen* this book is amazing. I can't stop listening.

Sci-Fi Plus a Courtroom Drama

Somehow Sci-fi plus a courtroom drama equals a geuinely fun and engaging experience. It helps that the characters are so well thought out. Also Wil Wheaton was a great choice as narrator really brought the characters to life.

A wonderful book I couldn't stop listening

The story wasn't what I thought but still very good. I had envisioned a tail of regular Erath animals learning to speak and create their own Society. This wasn't that story. The only problem was the repeated use of the word said. I kept thinking that there are so many other words to use. In heavy dialogue scenes it was kind of distracting.
