Publisher's Summary

Humanity has been ravaged by alien war. Will the next encounter spell the end of mankind?

Sixteen billion people died in the last alien invasion of the Alliance's colony worlds. When survey ship Captain Jeff Colgan discovers a new alien race, he's required to investigate. But what if the life form is as deadly as the Merkiaari?

As the aliens discover Colgan's ship and begin to hunt him down, the captain's mission changes from one of study to one of survival. Nanotechnology was all that kept humanity afloat in their brutal war against the Merkiaari, and it led directly to the creation of vipers, a regiment of cyborg super soldiers tasked with protecting the Alliance. When Gunnery Sergeant Gina Fuentez finds one of the fabled viper cyborgs in a terrorist camp during a mission, her squad comes under attack. Two members of her squad are dead, and she'll face the same fate if she can't escape the ensuing firefight.

General Burgton's self-imposed mission is to safeguard the alliance from future Merkiaari attacks. As the black missions Burgton authorizes begin to fail, he spends trillions of dollars on a forbidden solution: artificial intelligence. When the project collapses, Burgton compounds his crime. If he can't build an A.I., he'll just have to steal one!

Great story...but no closer

this series is great and I really enjoyed it BUT let me warn you of something important to me. Its been 4 years since book 5 released and the author seems very uncertain and vague on when and if more books will come.

So if you hate not having closure then i suggest you bookmark this series then walk away for a year or two and we can all hope the series wraps itself up.

It got me good

This is an excellent series. Books 1 2 & 3 are very much like an action movie: war, tech, not very much depth to characters and an enemy who you only really start to scratch the surface of by the end of book 3. This makes it a light and fun read- you don't have to contemplate the deeper implications of what is going on in the story ( because there are none): or whether the author is trying to make some sort of commentary on society today - he is not . The story itself is often predictable. Despite that it's still a fun read - like watching a rerun of your favourite action flick! I quite enjoyed it.

The audiobook is excellent quality and the reader is very clear. I still laugh every time the reader says "SHAN system" because of his overemphasis (think of you saying "Shan" and somebody repeatingly asking you what did you say?) . I would say that there was probably four chapters in the entire series that were worth skipping because they were obviously fillers to help the author get to his next book . Also the opening sequence in the beginning book was a little random . I still feel like I didn't quite understand that battle sequence and how it fit in. Maybe it was an issue with how it got transferred from the printed page to Audible - but these are all minor quibbles.

In general, I avoid reading books that are part of a series unless that series is finished. That's because I find many of the authors keep turning out books year after year after year with no end in sight to generate income and the story degrades and I eventually get bored. However, I have to say this series has got me - and it has got me good! I'm hoping the series will finish before I get caught up to the most current book :) I highly recommend it!
