Story
For the first time as an Orbit special edition, Brent Weeks's blockbuster novella Perfect Shadow tells the origin story of the Night Angel trilogy's most enigmatic character: Durzo Blint. Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend.

Story
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Publisher's Summary
The nail-biting continuation of the Lightbringer series from New York Times best seller Brent Weeks.
When does an empire fall?
The Seven Satrapies have collapsed into four—and those are falling before the White King's armies.
Gavin Guile, ex-emperor, ex-Prism, ex-galley slave, formerly the one man who might have averted war, is now lost, broken, and trapped in a prison crafted by his own hands to hold a great magical genius. But Gavin has no magic at all. Worse, in this prison Gavin may not be alone.
Kip Guile will make a last desperate attempt to stop the White King's growing horde. Karris White attempts to knit together an empire falling apart, helped only by her murderous and possibly treasonous father-in-law, Andross Guile.
Meanwhile Teia's new talents will find a darker use—and the cost might be too much to bear. Together they will fight to prevent a tainted empire from becoming something even worse.

Amazing Storytelling, Jarring Plot Hook
Fantastic storylines for Gavin, Liv, Karis, and The Mighty. I would read an entire book series just about Liv.
Baffling storyline for Kip and Tysus. I understand that what they struggled with is a serious condition that more people should be aware of... but while we're on that subject, why not talk about the issue of 17th century soldiers who defecate their guts out and die from dysentery, or how nobles deal with not impregnating their room slaves. Do condoms exist? Made from... orange luxen?
The point is, I don't care to know the answers to these questions in my fantasy novels. I do also read historical fiction, but that's not what this book is.
(Sorry for spelling - I've never seen any of the above names and terms in written.)

Long drawn out filler
Overall the story was good but it could have been shotened in a few chapters going with another book.
Narrator was good but there are numerous splices where it was clearly rerecorded. They are in other books but seemed more frequent in this one.
Spoilers ahead
Kip: how did he go from what he was in the last book to a military genius? I get that Andross and the cards helped but it felt rushed and odd.
Gavin: he spent the entire book in a tortured state. It got really tiring to read. I would have loved for him to figure out the Dead Man way earlier and have his wit go up against him.
Karris: Changed from a fearsome warrior to a plaything for Andross.
Teia: Her plot is decent, though a bit long.
The climax seems to be dealing with vaginosis. yay?

I like the many mini plots within the overall plot.
I like the many mini plots within the overall plot. I love that you shone a light on a sensitive issue for women. And I love how many scripture references were in it and disliked so many cuss words.
