Publisher's Summary

The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malazan Fourteenth Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire’s greatest champion, Dassem Ultor, was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death. But elsewhere, agents of a far greater conflict have made their opening moves. The Crippled God has been granted a place in the pantheon; a schism threatens and sides must be chosen. Whatever each god decides, the ground rules have changed irrevocably, terrifyingly, and the first blood spilled will be in the mortal world. A world in which a host of characters, familiar and new, including Heboric Ghost Hands; the possessed Apsalar; Cutter, once a thief now a killer; the warrior Karsa Orlong; and the two ancient wanderers Icarium and Mappo, each searching for such a fate as they might fashion with their own hands, guided by their own will. If only the gods would leave them alone. But now that knives have been unsheathed, the gods are disinclined to be kind. There shall be war, war in the heavens. And the prize? Nothing less than existence itself...

"This novel and all others in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series follow my own pronunciations of 'Malazan' words and names. My thanks to Michael and Jane and everyone at Brilliance Audio." - Steven Erikson, Victoria, B.C. Canada, January, 2014

So many good plots!

I missed Kruppe but that was the only bad thing about this book. As intense and unpredictable as the previous books, just with even more action.

Narrator ruins it

Michael Page has got to be the laziest, most inconsistent narrator ever. His pronunciations-and even worse- his character voices change, every.single.book. Honestly, if you're getting paid to do this huge, well-known series, couldn't you at least listen to your past performances to remember what you did last book? The most egregious voice examples are Karsa, Icarium, and Iskaral. He never pronounces Tavore, divers, and soletaken the same way twice. It's just so off-putting, like entirely new characters each time instead of returning to your favorites.

Fantastic climax

This was performed as expected. Michael is oven cooked bacon where Ralph is a slow cooked roast. I love them both, but Mike has that flavour that goes with anything. Ralph is set in that way of: fucking good meat, excellent potatoes and veggies.

Ridiculous comparisons aside, this one was wild. Steve is crushing it for me. I cherish these characters, and if you're hoping for some solid Kalam action, you get it!

Thanks to the author and the narrator, and everyone else. Always a fair trade!

one of my favorites in the series.

Thrones of power in jeopardy, power's rising ancient and imminent. The tale of the fallen continues in one of my favorite in the series.

Trial by fire

This is my second reading, and I find I have forgotten many things. The novels in this series can be read as stand-alone stories, until I become invested with the characters.

Then I want to forego all other pastimes until I get to a stopping point. Fun fact: There isn't one.

I've read this entire series before, and still want to follow the stories of the characters. I want to read the whole 10 novels again all at once. (I've purchased the audiobooks and calculated. It would take 16 days to listen to them all!)
But I need to take a break.

Par for the series

I enjoyed this well enough. Not thrilled with narrator or Erickson's writing. Not terrible either.
