Publisher's Summary

For thousands of years, the human mind has been shrouded in mystery. But with the latest advancements in both our understanding of the brain and the technology we use to look inside it, scientists have vastly improved their grasp of the human mind. Now, more than at any other point in human history, we can better explain and describe how the human mind has evolved; how our genes and environments work together to mold the people we become; and the sources, symptoms, and potential treatment methods for debilitating mental disorders like depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and many others.

The human mind and its complexities lie at the heart of who we are as human beings. And grasping its origins, no matter how mysterious they can sometimes be, is essential to a well-rounded understanding of answers to questions that have fascinated and perplexed humanity throughout history.

This 24-lecture series is your guide to the latest information and viewpoints on what scientists know about this fascinating subject. Taught by an award-winning teacher whose training as a clinical psychologist straddles both the science of the mind and its impact on individual lives, their comprehensive approach reveals how that science applies to the life of our species - and to your own life as well.

The lectures explore theories about how the mind works on both an evolutionary and individual scale. Each offers its own fascinating insights. But by examining them both individually and together, Professor Hinshaw reveals similarities and differences in viewpoints and approaches that wouldn't be apparent from a focus on just one - providing you with the best possible picture about what the mind truly is.

Interesting, Well Written and Comprehensive

Dr. Hinshaw did an excellent job with this job. I’ve always been interested in the mind and brain and how it all works and how it’s developed over the years. This book is a deep dive into the evolution of the human mind and even looks at where we might be in the future.
It’s enlightening to learn that we’ve made advances in treatments and diagnosis of mental disorders. 50 or even 30 years ago it wasn’t really a think and mentally ill individuals were placed in hospitals and chained to beds and not treated properly. We need to discuss and tell our children (in the kind manner) about the mental health struggles we’ve faced so they know they can talk about their own struggles and maybe we can even prevent them from going through what we’ve gone through. There’s still a lot of research that needs to be done in this field but people like Dr. Hinshaw are are making great strides to people educate the greater population.
I especially like that he talks about his family’s personal experience with mental health struggles and misdiagnosis. We can learn from that and from our past generations to help us be stronger and wiser for our future generations.
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the mind, mental health and the heritability of certain mental disorders. You will learn a lot and probably need to listen again there’s so much information here.

Enlightening, comprehensive, pleasure to listen

Dr. Stephen Hinshaw provides a comprehensive, up to date, detailed and stimulating explanation of how the mind develops and functions. Dr. Hinshaw synthesizes knowledge from the humanities, evolutionary science, computer science, biochemistry, pharmacology, mathematics, psychology, social psychology, and psychiatry into a complex but easy to follow narrative that explains the complex function of the human mind. His narratives are easy to follow and exciting to hear. I highly recommend this excellent course.
