Publisher's Summary

The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking.

Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains: System One is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System Two is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. Examining how both systems function within the mind, Kahneman exposes the extraordinary capabilities as well as the biases of fast thinking and the pervasive influence of intuitive impressions on our thoughts and our choices. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, he shows where we can trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking, contrasting the two-system view of the mind with the standard model of the rational economic agent.

Kahneman's singularly influential work has transformed cognitive psychology and launched the new fields of behavioral economics and happiness studies. In this path-breaking book, Kahneman shows how the mind works, and offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and personal lives - and how we can guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble.

What the critics say

“A tour de force... Kahneman’s book is a must read for anyone interested in either human behavior or investing. He clearly shows that while we like to think of ourselves as rational in our decision making, the truth is we are subject to many biases. At least being aware of them will give you a better chance of avoiding them, or at least making fewer of them.” (Larry Swedroe, CBS News)

“A major intellectual event... The work of Kahneman and Tversky was a crucial pivot point in the way we see ourselves.” (David Brooks, The New York Times)

“[Thinking, Fast and Slow] is wonderful, of course. To anyone with the slightest interest in the workings of his own mind, it is so rich and fascinating that any summary would seem absurd.” (Michael Lewis, Vanity Fair)

Editorial Review

What if you could tap into your own mind to understand how you think and make choices? The potential benefits could be limitless. Psychologist and economist Daniel Kahneman has won a Nobel Prize for exactly that and now, you can listen to what he has to say.

His bestselling work Thinking, Fast and Slow summarizes decades of research on the two thinking processes which govern the human mind: fast and slow. In this audiobook, Kahneman skillfully addresses the subjects of heuristics and biases, overconfidence in human judgement, the process of logic and how we make choices, to name a few. Not only is this an occasion for introspection and self-development, but his research has revolutionized the field of cognitive science and the repercussions of his thesis span from behavioural economics to medicine.

Listen very carefully to Patrick Egan’s narration, as this audiobook is packed with valuable information. Thanks to his steady pace and confident tone, listeners will be able to follow Kahneman’s intricate theories on higher thinking. In addition to his impressive credentials in education, Kahneman has been named by magazines such as Foreign Policy and The Economist as one of the world’s most influential thinkers and economists. His book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, has received awards from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Globe and Mail.

Very difficult to follow in audio format

The material is good but much is hard to apply.
The author presents little in terms of solutions to many fallacies or traps that our minds get us into.
I spaced out for entire chapters when the book discussed financial matters as the numbers are very difficult to compute.
Furthermore, many examples and quick checks require a knowledge of American history, slightly more difficult for a canadian to keep up with.
I will likely buy the book in paper to better understand the material.

Amazing content

Amazing content, but not ideal for listening. This book is one of those that a reading experience would be better. #Audible1

This is a great place to start if you want to understand human thinking and how that applies to the world

You've been thinking wrong.

Great read for anyone interested in behavioural economics! Daniel breaks down how our brains work; what we tell them to do and what they tell us to do. You won't make snap judgements as easily after reading this book and you will find it much easier to make comfortable decisions after learning how to use your brain most effectively.

Very informative - boost your critical thinking!

I quite enjoyed this book, at least the first half. Daniel's models of System 1 and System 2 brains is really easy to follow and understand. Have your mind blown by how much you really are biased by your experience and by what your brain feels is important to know and store in memory. Learn how lazy the brain is when making a decision... are you quick to judge? Well, you could be dead wrong and still feel like you are right.

Now, the second half of this book, while very informative, slows right down. There is a lot of information about statistics and research and all manner of stuff. All of it very interesting, but I found it slow and hard to listen to at times.

Pick this one up. It's the beginning of a journey.

Dense but worth it

Certainly not a casual listen, but this is an illuminating work, and well worth the effort.

unnecessary

The whole book could be summed up in one chapter. I feel like the guy just likes to listen to himself talk. most of what he talks about is completely useless and he never gets to the point. save yourself the time and read the last sentence of every chapter or better yet, just ask Chat to GPT to give you the summary of the entire book

The book to end all books...

I hope I don't over-geek about this book in this review, but I honestly think that if all books and knowledge were wiped out from the planet and all we had left was Daniel Kahneman's research, we would still rise as a civilized world (perhaps a much better one). So, may I respectfully suggest that you stop reading reviews and go and get this book? Enjoy :)

Persuasive humility

I really loved the author's humility. I was surprised when I learned that he'd won a noble price.

Take Notes

A tremendous amount of relevant information regarding human behavior and decision making. Stay consistent with the listen. I will listen again to better grasp the concepts.
