Story
The Annurian Empire is disintegrating. The advantages it used for millennia have fallen to ruin. The ranks of the Kettral have been decimated from within, and the kenta gates, granting instantaneous travel across the vast lands of the empire, can no longer be used. In order to save the empire, one of the surviving Kettral must voyage beyond the edge of the known world through a land that warps and poisons all living things to find the nesting ground of the giant war hawks. Meanwhile, a monk turned con-artist may hold the secret to the kenta gates.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. Story
It seemed the unthinkable had happened. Someone had actually targeted the Ghalian, an order of assassins known and feared across the systems. It was madness. Only a fool would go after the likes of them. But, it seemed, the galaxy had no shortage of fools. Retaliation most bloody was in order, and one man stood ready to spring into action. Hozark was his name, and he was no ordinary man. He was a Master Ghalian, an assassin skilled in the ways of death. Practical, mechanical, magical, to him it made no difference.

Publisher's Summary
Now includes special bonus content. Stay tuned after the audiobook to hear “The Last Abbot of Ashk’lan,” a short story by Brian Staveley.
The emperor of Annur is dead, slain by enemies unknown. His daughter and two sons, scattered across the world, do what they must to stay alive and unmask the assassins. But each of them also has a life-path on which their father set them, destinies entangled with both ancient enemies and inscrutable gods.
Kaden, the heir to the Unhewn Throne, has spent eight years sequestered in a remote mountain monastery, learning the enigmatic discipline of monks devoted to the Blank God. Their rituals hold the key to an ancient power he must master before it's too late.
An ocean away, Valyn endures the brutal training of the Kettral, elite soldiers who fly into battle on gigantic black hawks. But before he can set out to save Kaden, Valyn must survive one horrific final test.
At the heart of the empire, Minister Adare, elevated to her station by one of the emperor's final acts, is determined to prove herself to her people. But Adare also believes she knows who murdered her father, and she will stop at nothing - and risk everything - to see that justice is meted out.

Had to stop too cruel
The first hour of this book was old men abusing and torturing young men, and fathers murdering their daughters. wtf? whay would I endure more of this. The onky character I liked was the prince in the monastery, but he's being tortured and gaslit Is this going to be some military we broke you to make you better bull? I am so *not* into this narrative.

good plot bad story
The general bones of the plot are compelling. The world and organisations are very interesting. The down side is the three main pov's are pretty frustrating. They don't get anything right. Valen the special ops warrior loses every fight he's in except the last one and the test. He asks really dumb questions with obvious answers if he had any sense. The daughter is the worst politician, being a perfect example of every reason men claim women shouldn't be in positions of power in medieval times. She can't control he temper during public events and lashes out without following the rule of law. The last POV is the monk. He's not as dumb as the other 2 but he gets abused constantly because his teachers never bother to teach. It's s the most frustrating training style where ur expected to know how to do the thing without actually having anything explained.

A B- story with lots of violence against women.
As said above.
I stopped lisening when the love interest decided to go meet with the 2 boys who had sexuality asulteted her during a fight and threatened to rape her. Why did she make this decision? well one if the boys said he had something to show her but couldn't tell her and it ne3ded to be while our main character is busy with a test and can't come help her..... what the F is this story.

Just Overwhelmingly Depressing.
This book was fairly interesting with regards to the story itself, but gaddamn! Let something, ANYTHING positive happen to even one of your characters, please!
I try to always finish any book I start, but this one I had to take multiple breaks from. It was so consistently depressing that it was getting to my personal mental state.
Would not recommend. Will not be getting the next one.

Meh
Glad it was free. I won’t be continuing with the series, just didn’t find it interesting enough. The three siblings don’t have anything that makes them feel special or charismatic. The plot is ok, narrator is ok but some of the voices grated on my nerves. It kept me listening but only because it was free and I’m in between credits. 3-3.5/5, Luke warm for me.

A bit slow to get started but rich world building
#Audible1
The characters are compelling to follow and are vivid enough that you feel like you care about their fates. The world building is fascinating filled with details dropped here and there that, if you remember it later on, have a nice little pay off when it's referenced again. The performance is good as each character has their own accents and emotions.

Interesting concept that shoots itself in the foot
I'm genuinely interested in the plot and overall worldbuilding - it's a bit generic fantasy, but sometimes you're in the mood for that. However, the writing and performance has some "quirks" that completely take me out of it and ruin the experience. At chapter 22 I'm interested enough to finish the book, but won't be reading the rest of the trilogy.
First, I have to say the performance makes some bizarre choices that either mismatch the characters, or are honestly just silly. A young character who is a former thief seemed like he could have been played a bit more cheeky and energetic. Instead we get a stereotypical gruff cockney accent with a deep voice that made him sound like a 50 year old. It ruined the charming side of the character that you would otherwise get from the text. The most jarring example of this for me was the over the top fake Asian accent for some of the monks that genuinely sounded like a racist comedy routine. It's not even an issue of being sensitive over accents - these were completely straight characters being played like Mickey Rooney every time they spoke.
Second, the author is talented but can be downright annoying at times. He's trying to do the trope of fictional / fantasy swear words, but he's only come up with "kent kissing," and oh boy does he love to use it every other sentence in the first half of the book. It's repetitive and clunky. Great opportunity to showcase a bit of character building or worldbuilding - but instead literally every character peppers "kent kissing" through their speech no matter who they are or what the context is. This universe has literally one swear word apparently. There are a few other quirks of the author in use of repetitive descriptive language that seem a bit lazy and should have been caught in editing.
Female characters are all introduced by descriptions of their tits and curves straight out of the gate, and you're reminded of their appearance at every opportunity, even when they are wearing combat uniforms and otherwise practical clothing. It's not done in a sexy or appealing way, just corny. Their characters are either overly emotional or stone cold femme fatales. The more complex ones oscillate between the two states. It's a bit sad, because there is plenty that has my interest, I just can't get through a chapter without several involuntary eye rolls.
