Publisher's Summary

Author Melody Beattie's Codependent No More spent an astonishing three years on the New York Times best seller list and made codependent a household word. In this thoughtful sequel, she offers further helpful advice for making permanent, positive lifestyle changes.

Alcoholism, drug abuse, and similar destructive practices can render families dysfunctional. When the children of these families become adults, they sometimes develop self-defeating survival tactics, such as low self-esteem or an obsession with controlling another person's behavior. To help those stuck in codependent cycles identify and eliminate such troubling issues from their relationships, Beattie shares wisdom gained from years of experience. Beyond Codependency is a sensitive and supportive audiobook that encourages listeners to adopt a practical approach when confronting their own unhealthy and unproductive behaviors. As she did with the original, narrator Christina Moore lends her reassuring voice to this important book.

Melody and Christina! thank you both! awesome job! I like how Melody brought in many examples and scenarios and even included the kids in our codependent lives. I like how she says we need relationships. I will work on it. I had figured i was done, but I won't know if I am healed if I don't try! and Christina, you are perfect for narrating Melody's work. much love for you 2! xoxo

Thank you Melody, again.

Melodies first book, "Codependant No More", was suggested to me early in my recovery from drug, alcohol and caretaking addictions. I read it about ten years later, thinking it was not what I had needed at the time when it was suggested. Oh the endless misery it could have saved me if I'd have read it sooner. Don't wait to read both of these books. Please read them both now as though your life depended on it, because it very well may. My life has always been rather charmed. I almost felt bad for having problems getting my life together because from outside appearances, I had no reason to not thrive. But my life, my very existence was never about me, outside of the self loathing I was partaking in. Melody opened my eyes to the real root of all my problems in her books. I gained control of my life, for the first time in my life, due to the knowledge within her writing that I gained and applied. I'm now in control of how I feel, what I do, why I do it, how I do it, and no one can cause me to be anxious or angry or any other feeling. I feel like some kind of wise ninja, lol... Thank you so much Melody.

too much religion for my taste

the solution to problems should be in our own hands instead of some "external" force.

filled with wisdom

This book is filled with insight on humanity, not just people who grew up with or married alcoholics. I loved her ending too. We are here to love ourselves and each other, just as God intended.

Great material but the performance?

Great (essential) material for life.
But how this is performed, the way she speaks...aye yay aye.
It's so awful.
For people full of shame and blame, with this intense speaking style, forceful, stacatto, firm, jaunty words, it's just like it digs in the blame and shame. This is probably technically great on some level - but for addicts/codependents it's like it jabs at you with every word. It really needs to be softer and smoother, more warm and caring, for everyone involved.
Just uhhh.
When I'm tired, I actually can't handle it, I need to read the book :/

Beyond Codependency

This is a good continuation from her book on Codependent no more.
Ms. Beattie is a very good author and her experiences help me on a continual basis. I only wish I could have discovered her writings like 20 years ago, how much of a better person I could be today. So now is a new beginning even if not earlier. Everyone is a work in progress.
