Publisher's Summary

Life can be hard: your lover cheats on you; you lose a family member; you can’t pay the bills. And it can be great: you’ve had the hottest sex of your life; you get that plum job; you muster the courage to write your novel. Sugar - the once-anonymous online columnist at The Rumpus, now revealed as Cheryl Strayed, author of the best-selling memoir Wild - is the person thousands turn to for advice. Tiny Beautiful Things gathers the best of "Dear Sugar" in one place and includes never-before-published columns and a new introduction by Steve Almond. Rich with humor, insight, compassion - and absolute honesty - this book is a balm for everything life throws our way.

What the critics say

"A realistic and poignant compilation of the intricacies of relationships." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"These pieces are nothing short of dynamite, the kind of remarkable, revelatory storytelling that makes young people want to become writers in the first place. Over here at the Salon offices, we're reading the columns with boxes of tissue and raised fists of solidarity, shaking our heads with awe and amusement." (Sarah Hepola, Salon)
"Charming, idiosyncratic, luminous, profane.... [Sugar] is remaking a genre that has existed, in more or less the same form, since well before Nathanael West’s Miss Lonelyhearts first put a face on the figure in 1933.... Her version of tough love ranges from hip-older-sister-loving to governess-stern. Sugar shines out amid the sea of fakeness." ( The New Republic)

Do Yourself a Huge Favour and Listen to This Book

It's always interesting to listen to a book read by the author, although some books are better read by another voice (Stephen Fry is the best Harry Potter narrator in the universe) and some books are better read than listened to. But some books are written to be read aloud, some books are written in the active voice, from the narrator's perspective, in a conversational language. And then there are those rare books which are written with so much empathy that the only thing better than reading it is listening to it.
This book has all of those qualities, that make its better listened to, hearing the author's voice telling you her own story.
This book cannot be listened to in one sitting, every story needed a pause to let the story sink in. They were that good.
So not only is this book outstanding and phenomenal, it is also the perfect book to listen to the author read to you.
Do yourself an immense favour and listen to this book.

One of the Beat Books I’ve Ever Read

I listened to this book twice back to back. How can so much wisdom and love inhabit one human being? My heart swelled and my eyes teared up many, many times. I grew emotionally and felt love exponentially. Possibly one of the most beautiful, compassionate, hopeful books I have ever encountered. Thank you Cheryl for the beautiful gift you have just bestowed upon humanity.

Even when it wasnt my story, it was.

I had never heard of this column, written by "Sugar". I don't even remember how I came across this book. All I know is that, I'm grateful I did.

Even in the stories that seemingly had no relation to my life, I learned something. Be it; a new perspective, a surprising understanding, or a deep unexplainable compassion for those who lead a difficult life.

These stories that I played through my morning coffee, in the quiet of my livingroom while my kids slept, and my heart healed from it's very recent heartbreak, allowed me to; laugh, cry, and think deeply about my world.

Thank you, Sugar.

Dear Abby eat your heart out ...

I loved this book, narrated by the author, Cheryl Strayed. Although I would highly recommend it to people in their twenties, and thirties, And even forties, I found myself, at 53 welling up with tears, and gleaning nuggets of advice and forgiveness from Sugar’s columns. There were stories I could relate to personally, and some I couldn’t, but all were beautiful in their own way. Thanks Sweet Pea!
