Publisher's Summary

Mercenary soldiers in the service of the Lady, the Black Company stands against the rebels of the White Rose. They are tough men, proud of honoring their contracts. The Lady is evil, but so, too, are those who falsely profess to follow the White Rose, reincarnation of a centuries-dead heroine. Yet now some of the Company have discovered that the mute girl they rescued and sheltered is truly the White Rose reborn. Now there may be a path to the light, even for such as they. If they can survive it.

A litle taste of necromancy

Slower than the first book. Good intrigue and necromantic twist. Realy love the character and how they interac with each other.

An Improvement on Book One

Glen Cook does a better job of weaving a coherent plot in this second book of 'The Black Company' series. It follows the continued chronicle from Croaker - Medic and Archivist - dedicated to his fellow soldiers in the Company, and simultaneously questioning the morality of their role in the army of an evil employer: "The Lady". At the same time, the book follows a second plotline: the ambiguity and angst of a small-time ne'er-do-well named Marron Shed - failing tavern-owner & pimp, employer of the girl Darling, and host of her guardian: ex-company soldier Raven - becoming trapped in a horrifying scenario.
Both threads involve a threat to The Lady's primacy in her war for control of the North and both threads proceed sinuously.. meeting at an effective combat-heavy but admittedly too-intuitive climax. Although the text is often strikingly sophomoric, Cook delivers a better-crafted plot in 'Shadows Linger' (and explores the duality within his characters nicely). It's an improved effort.

Marc Vietor's narration is again solid: interested (he clearly enjoys the book he is reading); with great tone (his somewhat gravelly voice is comfortable to listen to for hours); and emotive (his timbre and cadence are remarkable). Furthermore, the voice-acting is creditable - he avoids nonsensical accents and the easily-distinguishable character voices feel genuinely faithful to their personalities as written. Vietor is a true professional.

On the strength of continued above-average narration and improvements in plot structure & characterization, this second installment in a series with an innovative point-of-view is worthy of 7.5 stars out of 10.
