Publisher's Summary

The classic guide to enlightened living that first presented the Buddhist path of the warrior to a Western audience.

There is a basic human wisdom that can help solve the world's problems. It doesn't belong to any one culture or region or religious tradition - though it can be found in many of them throughout history. It's what Chögyam Trungpa called the sacred path of the warrior.

The sacred warrior conquers the world not through violence or aggression but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The warrior discovers the basic goodness of human life and radiates that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others. That's what the Shambhala teachings are all about, and this is the book that has been presenting them to a wide and appreciative audience for more than 30 years.

A Guide to Developing Practical Wisdom for Life

Over the last 15 years I have read and reread this book many times. I am an agnostic atheist with little patience for religious explanation and I have no problem with the contents of this guide. It makes use of extensive metaphor as it goes into the later chapters, but it is secular throughout and the value that it offers is based on practical grounding in every day experience.

The most productive periods of my life have taken place when I'm practicing what is in this book.

At those times when I'm feeling out of touch with important parts of my life, this simple book provides reminders of methods that can be immediately started to get grounded and back in touch with myself and begin interacting constructively with those parts of life again. It is not easy to implement the contents of this book, but with a little discipline the practices and perspective offered are very powerful and positive.

One of my favorites

I absolutely love this book. I’ve purchased it 4 different times, and once in audible. The audible narrator is terrible but this book is great and would recommend to everyone. The actual book, not the audible.

Love the book, the narrator not so much

Considering that the sacred path is an equanimous one, a soft, soothing, and calm voice would have carried and demonstrated the message beautifully. The narrator’s work and effort is appreciated (especially since I love audiobooks more than reading); her voice just wasn’t the perfect fit for this material - according to my aesthetic taste, that is.

Narrator was not carefully chosen!

The book could've been 10x's better read by someone else but it's still a good.
