Stephen A. Smith has never been handed anything, nor was he an overnight success. Growing up poor in Queens, the son of Caribbean immigrants and the youngest of six children, he was a sports-obsessed kid who faced struggles, from undiagnosed dyslexia to getting enough cereal to fill his bowl. As a basketball player at Winston-Salem State University, he got a glimmer of his true calling when he wrote a newspaper column arguing for the retirement of his own Hall of Fame coach, Clarence Gaines.

Story
Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

Gia and Raashaun Casey met when they were two teenagers living around the corner from each other in Queens. They have been together for an astounding 25 years and have remained together through Raashaun's growing celebrity, a devastating (and very public) cheating scandal, and the births of five children. Now, they are stronger and more committed to each other ever, and their fans are clamoring to know how they did it. In Real Life, Real Love, Gia and Raashaun explore the entire chronology of their love story with remarkable vulnerability, searing honesty, and a lot of humor.

Story
In his early 20s, Curtis Jackson, known as 50 Cent, rose to the heights of fame and power in the cutthroat music business. A decade ago, the multi-platinum selling rap artist decided to pivot. His ability to adapt to change was demonstrated when he became the executive producer and star of Power, a high-octane, gripping crime drama centered around a drug kingpin's family. The series quickly became "appointment" television, leading to Jackson inking a four-year, $150 million contract with the Starz network - the most lucrative deal in premium cable history.

Publisher's Summary
Charlamagne Tha God, New York Times best-selling author of Black Privilege and cohost of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, reveals his blueprint for breaking free from your fears and anxiety to reach that elusive next level of success.
Fear is holding you back. It’s time to turn the tables and channel your fears to actually fuel your success.
Being “shook” is more than a rap lyric for Charlamagne; it’s his mission to overcome. While it may seem like he is ahead of the game and should have nothing to worry about, he is still plagued by anxieties - fear of being weak; fear of being a bad dad; fear of being a worse husband; and, ultimately, fear of failure. Shook One chronicles his journey to beat back those fears and empowers you to no longer be held back from your potential.
Shook One details the ways anxiety has been a driving force in Charlamagne’s life since childhood. For many years, he stressed over what he thought were personal shortcomings: being unpopular in school, potential rejection by women, being ugly, and, worst of all, falling into the life of stagnation or crime that caught up so many of his friends and family in his hometown of Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
Even after achieving national prominence as a radio personality, Charlamagne still found himself paralyzed by thoughts that he wouldn’t be able to take his career to the next level. But now, in Shook One, he is working through these problems with help from mentors, guests on his show, and therapy. He knows therapy and showing weakness are anxiety-producing in the Black community, but this is one of the reasons he wants to own his truth - to clear a path for others in hopes they won’t feel shame while dealing openly with their mental health.

Great listen with plenty of golden nuggets.
I'm a big fan of black privilege, it was probably one of my favorite reads this year. Although this one did not captivate me as much as his first one, CTG has an amazing story and I love the way he tells it. Both books got me rethinking life and this one in particular my relationship and how to be a better boyfriend and future husband.

This was an excellent book
From beginning to the end of this audiobook Char was able to keep me engaged and entertained. The best part about this book is that it's made me realize and come to terms with the anxiety I've been feeling my entire life but had no idea what to label it, I always thought anxiety was just a bunch of panic attack's but this book made me realize different. Anxiety is very real and so many of us face it everyday and over some of the smallest things.

Raw truth about mental health
Charlamagne Tha God doesn’t hold back talking about mental health. His raw recount of his experience makes you feel like you’re not alone in your journey of discovery and healing. To see a successful man go through the same things other people with anxiety goes through gives people hope that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Great book, highly recommended
