About this listen

Hoke Moseley has had enough. Tired of struggling against alimony payments, two teenage daughters, a very pregnant and very single partner, and a low-paying job as a Miami homicide detective, Hoke moves to Singer Island and vows never to set foot on the mainland again. But on the street, career criminal Troy Louden is hatching plans of his own with a gang that includes a disfigured hooker, a talentless artist, and a clueless retiree. But when Louden's simple robbery results in ruthless and indiscriminate bloodshed, Hoke quickly remembers why he is a cop and hurls himself back into the world he meant to leave behind forever.

A masterly tale of midlife crisis and murder, Sideswipe is a page-turning thriller packed with laughs, loaded with suspense, and featuring one of the most truly original detectives of all time.

Quentin Tarantino once testified that his oddly humorous yet graphically barbarous films are like a Charles Willeford novel.

That is absolutely the case in 'Sideswipe'.

The Crimes discussed in the novel are pretty run-of-the-mill, but that incongruity between brutality and dark chuckles is incredibly enjoyable. Miami PD Homicide Detective Hoke Mosely contemplates leaving the force after suffering a bizarre "shell-shock"-like breakdown - and finds himself caught up in the investigation of some B&Es at his new employer, and a bungled robbery conducted by the oddest criminal consortium I have ever read (a career criminal somehow proud of his sociopathy; a failing artist; a horribly disfigured stripper; and a hilariously clueless 'Mr. Magoo'-clone). This isn't a sophisticated Crime Thriller by any means - but rather a rollercoaster-ride tongue-in-cheek Coen Brothers movie of a romp.

As to the presentation: Narrator Stephen Bowlby - backed up with exemplary technical support from Blackstone Audio Inc. - turns in a truly fantastic performance. Bowlby's deadpan delivery suits the text *perfectly*.

When all is taken into consideration, this recording of a most unusual novel merits 9.5 stars out of 10. It's not much of a "Mystery", so if that's what you're expecting.. look elsewhere. I was in that category.. but after I decided to let expectations go and just enjoy the ride, the 'Hoke Mosely' novels really deliver.
I feel fortunate to have gotten this book as a 'Plus' selection.. because, actually, every entry in the series rates a Credit.
