Description

Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can't outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling's game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her - or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

Fun YA Read

Overall I'd give this book 3.5 stars. It's fun and gripping, definitely a good read. It only loses a few stars from me because I wasn't a huge fan of Mal.

Meh

Not a fan of Alina here. She’s way too obsessed with Mal and loses herself in him. Mal is also like… a narcissist? I wish Alina actually came into her own here instead of allowing herself to be defined by Mal or as a counter to the Darkling.

An okay story progression.

I say this without the opportunity to have yet read the next, but this is my fourth book by this author and she is a phenomenal storyteller. I can only imagine the next won't disappoint.

Where's the romance

I wish there was more romance between characters. There hardly was anything.... even teasing and kissing would have be nice.

I was disappointed with Siege & Storm

After reading the first part -Shadow & Bone, I was very excited for the next book, but the character of Alina, seems to lost all her confidence, poise, she seems to be now this weak girl, who doesn’t know her own mind. I would have rather seen her loving and still fighting the Darkling and not jumping from one guy to another.

Its alright-ish. Warning! Minor spoilers in my review.

The performance from Lauren Fortgang is always a pleasure! Especially during emotional vulnerable moments for the guy characters, she somehow makes them extra human. Tho the priest voice is a tad weird lol.

The story itself is weird?? Mal is just hella dumb and so is Alena. They have no communication skills whatsoever so it was frustrating to listen to them "talk". Darkling also coulda been better but he's never properly flushed out as a character, which is sad. They could've utilized that special connection so much more. Ultimately didnt care about the drama that they had. Alena was as bland as a cardboart lmao.

But oh! Nikolai! He was really fun and can be compelling at times too. o3o Leigh Bardugo just needs to flesh him out even more and he golden lol. But idk if she does in the following books lmao. Hope she does. Fingers crossed! lol

Performance was good! Story not so much

I didn't like the storyline much. There was definitely not that much of a progression with the plot as much as I would have hoped for but i will continue the series nonetheless. I do want to see what becomes of the sun summoner.

Excellent Sequel!

I started this series yesterday, and have already gone through both of the first two books. I'm loving this series so far!

A Straight-up Placeholder

This is clearly the 2nd novel in a trilogy. It attempts to repeat the best aspects of the first book and blatantly sets up the third book. Leigh Bardugo adds some new characters and builds on her Grisha Magic System (explaining theory and adding more 'Amplifiers', for example), but spends an inordinate amount of effort on character development. It's not a bad plan.. but falls short. The author goes overboard on the YA Fantasy clichés: revelling in the misunderstood teenaged heroes (merely revealing them as self-absorbed petulants) and building on relatable romantic urges (but contriving a nonsensical love triangle). The pacing is off in this one, too - the middle half of the novel is plodding - and the desperate "I would die for you" young hero clichés are cringeworthy. Bardugo knows how to write - and there are flashes of brilliant timing (and dialogue) - so this poor effort is regrettable.

Lauren Fontang is annoyingly sibilant in this reading (her "s"s are so sharp some of them literally *whistle* - you simply must not use earphones). She also plods through the text somewhat (speeding to 1.20X helped). Slavic-sounding words and accents are realistic (and she largely avoids truly annoying character voices in this one), but her performance is sub-par. She was much better on 'Shadow and Bone' and hopefully will improve with 'Ruin and Rising'.

I will continue the series (the first novel - and to some extent *this* one - teases good things in the final installment), but the quality of this segment is disappointing.
I am hoping reading this was worth the investment. This stereotypical "middle" book is a 5-star out of 10 novel.
