Publisher's Summary

Just when you thought you have escaped your past, he hunts you down.

She moved far away to try and forget her past. A past that seeped back in when she least expected it and crushed her soul, over and over. She tried to keep the evidence packed away in boxes high up on a closet shelf like carefully packing away a tragic part of her life. As if sealing the boxes was sealing away a time in her life she desperately wanted to go back and change.

Until one day, a mysterious letter arrives from an unknown sender that unravels everything.

FBI special agent Tori Hunter returns to her hometown of Manchester, Minnesota, for the first time in 20 years to investigate the disappearance of a woman who is gone without a trace. She is desperate to solve a case that will cause her to confront her own painful past and question the motives of friends she thought she knew and trusted. It will plunge her and the other detectives into the crosshairs of a dangerous killer while in search of the truth.

A book club favorite and heart-stopping thriller that fans of John Sandford, James Patterson, Karin Slaughter, Rachel Caine, or Angela Marsons will be hooked to by one of the best new authors in crime fiction.

Good story but difficult listen

The narration made this a hard story to follow. I found that I really had to focus to keep characters straight. I found myself thinking about his precise diction rather than the story.

Enjoyable

The narrator was very good, maintaining inflections in their voice that Express the varying character emotions while continuing to be soothing. The story was good, with good character development but was predictable.

monotone narrator

i found it hard getting through this book. the narrator was sadly lacking. I may have given this book a better score if the narration wasn't that bad. main character couldn't be really annoying at times. the writing could have been better. felt like the twilight series that was designed for teens was better written.

Very good procedural...

From the author of the McRyan series (First Case, St. Paul Conspiracy, Deadly Still Water and more). I zipped through that series when it was released and if there were more to this one I would do the same.
This is an excellent procedural. A bit methodical and repetitive at times but for the most part it moved along at a pretty good pace. This book reminds me of Robert Dugoni’s book My Sister’s Grave, the first book in the Tracy Crosswhite series. FBI agent returns to her hometown after receiving a taut about a young woman who’s gone missing on the twentieth anniversary of her own sister’s disappearance. It’s a convoluted chase to find the kidnapper with a few red herrings thrown in.
Johnny Peppers does a great job narrating.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

How did I miss this one?

As a major fan of the McRyan Mysteries series by Roger Stelljes I somehow overlooked the release of SILENCED GIRLS four months ago. The fact that Audible Listener Shelley, who I follow, reviewed it a few days after release makes missing it unlikely. In and case I've now listened to it and look forward to the release of the next book in the Tori Hunter series. Johnny Peppers narrates Silenced Girls superbly as usual for him.

One never goes wrong in selecting a Roger Stelljes novel.

Doesn't anyone edit books anymore?

This book has received many great reviews so I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying it. I was astounded at the number of grammatical and pronunciation errors, real turn-offs for me. The narration was flat and, with few exceptions, it was difficult to follow which characters were speaking.
I suppose that even a very lame romance appeals to some readers, but this one...Well, after approximately three weeks, a strong, capable woman decides to change her entire life? Worthy of a bodice-ripper, but not a serial killer mystery.

Excellent Narration

Excellent narrations by Peppers brought the tension out in this story. He is a good narrator, having listens to other audios he has read.
A feisty, opinionated FBI agent, who has made a name for herself in rescuing children. Everything changes, on the 20 th anniversary of her missing twin. she received an envelope. She returns to her hometown the nightmare and questions wanting an answer. A plot that is thick with details, and for Braddock and Toni, working together by accident found the key to unravel this case.A touch of romance, she feels broken. Was it time to sift thru those old hurts, and have a life for herself. Good strong characters with Toni and Braddock. The plot flowed, a lot of details at time.

Keeps you guessing!

Roger Stelljes weaves an interesting and exciting read. The characters are great, the story keeps you guessing and the plot has more than enough twists and turns. Great way to spend your audible time.
