What the critics say

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

so good but!

I loved this, the story was great, the narrator fantastic as well. But, there are words used in this that I'm unsure how to feel about. Some of these words, if I'm remembering correctly were: "transvestite" and "Indian/Injun". I know part of the reason these words were used was due to the fact that the story takes place in New Orleans and the characters who used these words were technically very old (like WWII old, Vietnam old, or 18th century old). But yeah, I don't know how to feel about it. Also all the references to how Jane can "fight like a man". The reason why I don't like this "fighting like a man" is because it inadvertently suggests that fighting like a woman is a bad thing. I would prefer if it was something more inclusive like just saying she can fight well and then make reference to how skilled she is, like if she has a brown belt in Karate. It was originally published in 2009, but I do believe the world was progressive enough in 2009 so as to leave out the sexist "fight like a man" trope. Also, I can only hope the written version has footnotes or endnotes in it that explain the use of the racist or homophobic words.
