"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward--and Black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?" Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvert--whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or rapping--it sure is entertaining.

Story
Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Story
With a sensibility that recalls her beloved screen characters, including Yvette, Queenie, Shug, and the iconic Cookie from Empire, yet is all Taraji, the screen actress writes of her families - the one she was born into and the one she created. She shares stories of her father, a Vietnam vet who was bowed but never broken by life's challenges, and of her mother, who survived violence both in the home and on DC's volatile streets. Here, too, she opens up about her experiences as a single mother.

Publisher's Summary
Insightful essays, poignant life advice, and pithy pearls of wisdom from one of comedy’s brightest rising stars
Comedian, writer, actress, and social media star Amanda Seales is a force of nature who has fearlessly and passionately charted her own course through life and career. Now, in her one-of-a-kind voice that blends academic intellectualism, Black American colloquialisms, and pop culture fanaticism, she’s bringing her life’s lessons and laughs in this audiobook. This volume of essays and axioms provides Seales’s trademark “self-help from the hip” style of commentary, fueled by ideology formed from her own victories, struggles, research, mistakes, risks, and pay-offs. Unapologetic, fiercely funny, and searingly honest, Small Doses engages, empowers, and enlightens listeners on how to find their truths while still finding the funny!

Small doses is key!
I love Amanda Seales and what she stands for. The book is very insightful and I love Amanda's transparency. I learned a lot myself and think that any young black female should READ this book. I capitalized the word read because I personally preferred the regular version of the book. Although it was nice to hear the book being read with Amanda's intonations, I don't think narrating is her forté. Coming from a perfectionist like herself, I was surprised to hear how her speech was rushed and unfortunately made some words sound misarticulated. Another reason why I like the non-audio version is what many absolutely love: the sound effects and . the . Singing. Now don't get me wrong, I love Amanda's humour and I absolutely love her raspy singing voice when referencing to some things but, in *small doses*. For me, it was overkill. I did enjoy the "podcasty" feel of the audiobook and the sections "Gem droppin'" and "that one time"... so creative! I also liked how genuine she was and I almost fell off my chair laughing when she talked about the red flags in her past relationships (especially the guy who wanted to learn how to D.J.) hahaaa! Eww for real! Overall, like I said in the beginning, its a great read. There is a lot of knowledge in there especially if you're a no-nonsense creative person trying to build something for yourself. Thank you Amanda! ☝🏾✊🏾

Very Important topics ! Not a fun read but a necessary one
The book talks about alot of complex issues in the African American community from Amanda’s witty and smart point of view; however, the book was boring - i was shocked how boring it was. Definitely love and support her movement but the book was so boring!

Sigh...I didn't love it
I'm a fan of Amanda so I appreciate the work she did. And yes, there are definitely some Gems. It's not a bad read at all, But as someone that regularly listens to her podcast I found it to feel a bit recycled. I've heard a lot of the stories & anecdotes already. So I didn't come across any really poignant new insights to take with me. Also, I find Amanda to be a better extemporaneous speaker than "performer".

Amazingly unmatched!
Absolutely loved this and laughed my a** off most of the time... though it's a RAW, "Tell it like it is," dose of truth serum that may be hard to swallow, for some. But so relatable and MUCH needed. Thoroughly enjoyed! Awesome work!

Amazing as always
Amanda Seales keeps it real and is so insightful as always. I really enjoyed listening to her tell her story and experiences in her own voice. I need to quit playin myself and attend a Smart Funny and Black event. I support this woman 100%. I’ve never listened to her and thought to myself “oh she wildin”. But I always listen to her and think to myself “Truuueeeeeeeee”.

Hilarious, real and phenomenal black woman sharing her perspective. I especially appreciate Amanda sharing pieces of her mental wellness journey. More black woman should make space for mental wellness because we are the healers of our community and the world!
