What the critics say

"With unreliable characters, wry voices, exquisite pacing, and a twisting plot, Steadman potently draws upon her acting chops.... A darkly glittering gem of a thriller from a new writer to watch." (Kirkus Reviews)

“Captivating...daring... The threats and increasingly bad decisions accelerate with Bourne-like velocity.... Steadman [is] a newcomer worth watching.” (Publishers Weekly)

“An unbearably tense debut with a knockout premise, Something in the Water had me hooked from the very first sentence. Thrilling and thought-provoking, it’s the perfect beach read. I devoured it!” (Riley Sager, best-selling author of Final Girls)

What's to love?

I found this book to be a great disappointment after the reviews. The plot was improbable.( SPOILER ALERT: How did the narrator bury the bodies of two large, grown men all by herself, in record time, with a head injury? ) The characters were one-dimensional, shallow and completely unlikable, with not one redeeming quality. The only thing that motivates these characters is greed. Much of the plot is left unexplained, such as, what, specifically, was encrypted on that USB. The only good thing I can say about it is that the performance is excellent and made me want to like the narrator, which, in the end, I just couldn't. It was easy to listen to, and I kept expecting something significant to occur, or some wisdom to surface, but it was completely plot-driven and very unsatisfying.

brutally obvious and drawn out

I struggled to finish this, nothing interesting or new about the storyline. I would not recommend.

Hooked from the first page

Thoroughly captivating from beginning to end. The buildup was deliciously paced, and suspense lurked just under the surface from page one. Catherine Steadman's gorgeous narration brought the characters and story to life. This is the kind of book you want to savour but end up devouring in a day.

Well Done - Infuriatingly Idiotic Main Character

I feel awful giving this book a bad review as it was well written and an original and intriguing story, not to mention the great narration.
However, I had a hard time believing anyone would be so naive and dim witted as the main character in this book was. Enough that it had me fuming and ready to scream at a fictional character.
The relationship between all characters was very unrelatable and unrealistic, causing a lot of the conclusions jumped to by said characters to be confusing.
unfortunately for me this overrode what the book could have been

Loved it!!

I loved this book. Catches your attention right from the beginning then slowly builds up to a finale I didn’t see coming. Definitely worth the read. Read it so fast I need more.

Had to turn it off - so not good

I read all the reviews and thought this was pretty darn safe but oh my goodness. Nobody would do the things these people are doing- it wasn’t even laughable or enjoyable to let me suspend my disbelief and just go with it, but so unbelievable that I had to turn it off; it was just so ridiculous. The narrator was lovely to listen to - being an author and actor (downtown abbey) - she did a great job - just I could not get past how absolutely ludicrous the plot line.

Amazing debut Novel.

Catherine Steadman's writing and narration had me hooked right from the start. I've listened to a lot of novels and this ranks up with the best.

Too Much Cringe

I put this audio book down too many times to count because I was so frustrated with the blinding stupidity of the protagonist... it was cringeworthy. I only finished the book out of sheer persistence. Not recommended unless you want to be frustrated.

Wanted to like it...

Couldn’t even get halfway through. Performance was great but felt completely disconnected from the story and characters. Much prefer the works of Gillian Flynn - love twists and turns. Didn’t feel there were any in this book.

Good but...

Doesn't really get going til halfway through. After that it's pretty good. She seems to introduce some characters that don't serve any purpose to the overall plotline, yet spends entire chapters talking about them.
