Publisher's Summary

"Despite the challenges - an unreliable narrator, an intricate plot, a shifting timeline, and myriad characters - Stephanie Racine gives a flawless narration of this audiobook.... This intense thriller is made even better by her performance." (AudioFile Magazine)

From renowned journalist Alice Feeney comes a riveting new audiobook, Sometimes I Lie.

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:

  1. I'm in a coma.
  2. My husband doesn't love me anymore.
  3. Sometimes I lie.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can't move. She can't speak. She can't open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn't remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it.

Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

What the critics say

"With tension comparable to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, plus the imaginative Now-Then-Before construction, Feeney unfolds just enough in each chapter to keep you page-turning for more, and her character development is excellent." (NJ.com)

"The creepy feeling at the back of your neck is 100 percent real." (People Magazine)

It drags on, not that captivating

The story isn’t horrendous, but it lacks originality and it stretches over too many chapters and it can be a bit repetitive. Some parts feel like they’re drawing too much inspiration from Hollywood. In fact, It feels more like a story written in hopes of becoming a movie, than a good book.
The narrator does a good job, but it can’t save what is a pretty far fetched story with too many holes in it.
And the recurring nursery rhymes don’t do anything but annoy. I would recommend this only if you are out of options, but if you are buying this book because of its alleged resemblance to Gone Girl or Girl on a Train, don’t, they are not in the same league.

So good!

Every single twist caught me completely by surprise. This is the kind of book that has you staying up late into the night to find out what happens next. I would definitely recommend it!

A little slow but stick with it

At first I wasn’t sure I could stick with the story ...it seemed so slow but it was worth it in the end! Lots of great twists and turns.

Quite enthralling

I kept going back and forth in my decision to purchase this novel, but am so glad I did. I had to listen to it twice because when it ended the first time my jaw stayed dropped from the ending. I was like “Woah. What?! Wait...But?? Wwwhhhaattt??!! No. But..huh?!” It was a twist for sure and I loved it! The second time listening to it made the story even better and O found myself questioning the very unreliable narrator even more. I will admit the beginning was a bit slow for my liking, but the phenomenal performance by Stephanie Racine kept me listening. This was my first time reading anything by Alice Feeney and I am excited to read her other works.

A great story!

Plenty of twists and turns, this story had me hooked from the start. I kept trying to get away from the children so I could listen. I finished it in a 2-3 day span, and had to go back once to get recentered after one of the twists set me off balance. Great story. Great voice actor.

Whoa!

This was such a good listen. The narration was excellent. The story full of twists and turns. I listen on my train ride to and from work and had a hard time turning it off at the end of each journey. Fantastic!

Perfect narration and suspenseful storyline

Stephanie Racine have an exceptional performance. I will specifically be searching for other books she narrated. I truly felt like I was hearing a different voice for every character. The story was great, some parts are predictable but other plot twists are great. The main character is weak which was annoying and not what I expected but otherwise an exceptional read and I recommend!

Emotional Rollercoaster

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I haven't read a book in quite awhile and decided to try out an audio book. I think it may have influenced the way I felt about this book because there were a lot of other reviewers who hated all the characters. I personally liked Amber despite the ending. She had me pulled into all her lies. The ending was an emotional rollercoaster and for being my first audio book I was completely blown away. Growing up I read a lot of "Fear Street" books, which always had an open ending so the fact that this book had such an open ending didn't completely ruin it for me. However I did feel like some things were left unanswered like why Amber has OCD to begin with and why her parents supposedly stopped loving her. Also the parts with the sexual assault were extremely graphic and left me feeling uncomfortable. Otherwise I'd say this book was a solid 4/5. I would definitely recommend it.

Worth it!

A great story with good twists. The ending is a bit flat compared to the quality of the rest of the story. The voice actor does a really great job and is easy to listen to before bed.
