About this listen

Imara needs a familiar, but what she ends up with is the toughest kitten in the magical world.

Imara has lived a life separate from her family. She wasn’t shunned, just never acknowledged. The seventh child of a seventh child, she had had the bad taste to be born a girl. Her father’s family had no use for a girl, so she was sent to a city where the populace didn’t use magic.

Now that she is grown and entering college, she has chosen the best magical college in the country. It just happens to be located in her birth city.

When family begins to encroach on her education and someone threatens her life, can her new familiar do as he promised and keep her safe, or will Imara have to use what little magic she has learned to keep herself alive? Either way, things are going to be unpleasant.

Imara is a contract child and the seventh child of a seventh child on both sides of her parentage. Her mother is not allowed to keep her so she is raised in care. Mr. E, a tiny lovable black kitten becomes her familiar. This is Imara's story of her first term at mage college.

The story is great. Fun, well written and engaging. I have read this series many times and enjoy it more with every read.
Unfortunately the narrator doesn't do the story justice. He has a lovely voice, his reading is smooth and there are few mispronunciations. However, he doesn't vary the voices of the characters which means that during long conversations you can lose track of who is speaking.

Most importantly though is that the narrator doesn't put emotion into the characters' speech. Emotion coming through what the characters say is what brings an audiobook to life. Sadly, the narrator fails in this regard. Hopefully he does better with the other books in the series.

Good story but narration needs work.

The story is great but I am not a fan of the narrator, he is rather monotoned and doesn’t do the characters justice. I love this series and was unfortunately disappointed. Hopefully he gets better.

Great story
