Publisher's Summary
Following in the path of her blockbuster Kay Scarpetta thrillers, Patricia Cornwell's novel is a testimony to the singular versatility and narrative power of one of the country's best-read storytellers. In Southern Cross she casts her shrewd and knowing eye at the men and women in blue, in a story of corruption, scandal, and murder.
Richmond, Virginia, is a city rich in Southern history yet overrun by such modern-day problems as drug trafficking and escalating juvenile crime. Former Charlotte police chief Judy Hammer is brought in to clean up the police force - the most difficult assignment of her career. Now, in the face of overwhelming public scrutiny, she must navigate through local politics and prejudices to solve a brutal murder that springs straight from the rotting core of Richmond's heart.

A Nearly Painful Listen
Prior to going on my vacation, I purchased all three books in this series thinking "Wow, three Patricia Cornwell books! This is going to be good listening." What a mistake! This third book is worse than the previous two books. Shallow characters and ridiculous storylines with little glimpses of some kind of supernatural something or other happening for no apparent reason. If it wasn't for the inclusion of cell phones and the internet references I would think Cornwell wrote this when she was a high schooler. Karen White did a good job narrating this book. I will look for other books she narrates.

Boring!
Narration was good, but I was very disappointed in the story line. At one point I completely forgot the plot.

Disappointed
I read the first book in the series and liked it. This book was longer than necessary - too many irrelevant details and storylines.

Love this book!
Even better than the first in the Andy Brazil series! Patricia Cornwell colors mystery with just the right amount of quirky humor.

Few books compel me to review
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A completely different book.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not a Patricia Cornwell book.
Any additional comments?
I am incredibly disappointed in this purchase. I have purchased Patricia Cornwell books before but have not experienced such a poorly written book. From the character names to the story line.

Funny, fast-paced, somehow uplifting
An unusual, entertaining, vividly graphic mixture of human nature and dynamics, Murphy’s Law, real life, and imagination. Serious as well as laugh-out-loud funny. Both the writer and the voice actor clearly appreciate life’s outlandish realities as well as its predictable tedium

Lacking
So disappointing…not up to par with her earlier work. I’m so confused if I didn’t know from the get go that this was a Patricia Cornwell book I would have never believed this was written by her. I hope this was a lapse in judgement and not of what will be coming in the future. I seriously felt insulted that the author believed that there would be an audience for a story that consisted of constant demonstrations of ignorance and destruction of the English language. I have been a fan since Postmortem and have thoroughly enjoyed her story telling but this book is not representative of her talent.

Funny & entertaining!
Read as the sequel to Hornet’s Nest. Every bit as good, if not funnier. Highly recommend as a light, entertaining read.

Southern cross
Not one of Cornwell’s best stories, most intelligent characters were 2 dogs and a cat
