Just okay

Okay book describing history of recent technology developments. But quite boring unless you spent the last 5 years in a cave (and haven’t heard about Uber or Netflix - for each of them there is almost a whole chapter)

Delivers on 1/2 of its Subtitle

So this book has a subtitle that reads "Why the Subscription Model Will Be Your Company's Future - and What to Do About It"
About 5 hours is regarding the 1st part of this subtitile. The author presents overviews on some of the bigger companies that have been game changers in the subscription field (Netflix, Amazon, Adobe), but doesn't focus much on the details. The audio feels like a textbook, and I found my mind wandering quite a bit wondering when it would get to the good stuff. The good stuff, to me, is the application of the subscription model to your own business, which is what the 2nd half of the subtitle promises to deliver. It was an empty promise, there was nothing actionable for a business owner to use to transition to the subscription model. I was hoping the author would at least recommend some software tools, but alas, it was an empty promise. If you want an overview of the more obvious cases where big companies implemented the subscription model, give this a listen. If you want the HOW to implement the subscription model to your own company, keep looking. I know I will.

A fast food version of a book.

If you are a believer in the adage: “The old rules don’t apply...” then by all means, this book is for you.

If you are a skeptic and view the world through a complex lens, you may find this book to be the literary equivalent of fast food. Tasty & initially satisfying, but in the final analysis, closer to Kool Aid than red wine.

The examples used to support the various premises could have many reasons for success or failure. In many cases, those have become known after the publishing of Subscribed. Thus the justifications for some points falls apart.

This doesn’t eliminate the insight and perspectives presented in the book, but it does bring into question the certainty with which the authors arguments are presented.

Still, it’s worth a read.
