Raised in Queens, New York, by formerly Orthodox Jewish parents whose faith had been undermined by the Holocaust, Arnold Bernstein went on his own personal quest for spiritual meaning. He was ready to accept God in whatever form he chose to reveal himself and that form turned out to be Christ. But Bernstein soon perceived discrepancies in the various forms of Protestant belief that surrounded him, and so his quest continued - this time for the true Church.
Surprised by Christ combines an engrossing memoir of one man's life in historic times and situations from the Six-Day War to the Civil Rights Movement to the Jesus Movement in Berkeley with an examination of the distinctives of Orthodox theology that make the Orthodox Church the true home not only for Christian Jews, but for all who seek to know God as fully as he may be known.

More than an Autobiographical Story
Very interesting personal story which includes much more including excellent teaching both on Orthodox and Evangelical Protestant beliefs. I struggled with listening to the author's heavy deeper Jewish accented monotone voice, but realized that it actually forced me to listen even more intently to what he had to say, which overall helped me grasp more understanding than I otherwise would have.

Outstanding synopsis of Christian theology explained via a personal life journey.
This was an exceptional review and detailed description of underlying concepts that define and empower Judaism, Protestant Christianity and Orthodox Christianity. Bernstein’s approach simply takes his truly in-depth research of theological ideas as understood by these different groups and presents them without bias, both as a means of explaining them to his readers but also to gain his own deep awareness of who God is… not a God who chooses to love, but a God who IS love in essence. Brilliant work!

Wonderful book.
Father Bernstein is a credit to his Jewish heritage and his Christian witness. I am proud to call him a brother in the Ancient Church.
