Publisher's Summary

According to researchers, the vast majority - a whopping 75-98 percent - of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life. What we think about truly affects us both physically and emotionally. In fact, fear alone triggers more than 1,400 known physical and chemical responses in our bodies, activating more than 30 different hormones! Today our culture is undergoing an epidemic of toxic thoughts that, left unchecked, create ideal conditions for illnesses.

Supported by current scientific and medical research, Dr. Caroline Leaf gives listeners a prescription for better health and wholeness through correct thinking patterns, declaring that we are not victims of our biology. She shares with listeners the "switch" in our brains that enables us to live happier, healthier, more enjoyable lives where we achieve our goals, maintain our weight, and even become more intelligent. She shows us how to choose life, get our minds under control, and reap the benefits of a detoxed thought life.

Review

This book is so good and listening to Dr Leaf break down the concepts so well was what motivated me to get the book. However, I was really disappointed with the audio version. The narrator did not do this book justice. She read in a monotonous robotic tone for the entire time. This made it difficult for me to follow. I bought the kindle version and decided to read it myself..made a huge difference!

Not for me

Narrator was robotic and unemotional. Excessive citation of biblical quotes was tiring within the first ten minutes. I found the main point, that how and what we think about impacts our emotional, physical, and mental health was lost in the repetition of apparent scientific and biblical justifications for these ideas. Might be helpful to some people but the combination of narrator and presentation style lost me.

Interesting topic

Neuroplasticity is indeed a very interesting topic. This book rather discussed the idea and paved the foundation of neuroplasticity as a common knowledge. Shortly the read started feeling like a tv advertisements for 21 day detox plan, which essentially is a simple five step meditation principles. I did not find references to bible quite intuitive rather a discrete pointer to out of context scripture. Good read if you have time to read and understand those cited scriptures in a deep and mindful effort. In totality I found rather surprisingly self marketing content instead of purposefully structured material.

Narration is horrible. Sounds robotic

This is a great book. But I wish I would have sampled it first. The narration makes it very hard to listen to and get anything from it. Waste of a credit

Science and religious laden

I simply could not relate to this book. The book reads more like an anatomy and physiology of the brain, interspersed with far too many quotes from the Bible. I found it extremely repetitive chapter after chapter both on the science side and on the references to the Bible. While I have no problem making the linkages and quite enjoyed that, the repetitiveness and failure to get to the point were frustrating for me. I even skipped a few chapters to try to get to the 21 day program she talked about with five points To switch on the brain and I was so incredibly frustrated I had to give up. I was very fortunate not to have to pay for this book because if I had, I would have had to return it.

To many God references for me

Good listen. The brain science in this book is up to date with the latest recherche and the proposed 5 step, 21 day detox is also interesting and will try it for sure. BUT there are to many references to scriptures and the bible for me and that’s why it’s not a 5 star. I almost stopped listening in the first chapter because of it but decided to finish and was glad I did !
I believe in a higher power but maybe not exactly as described in the bible.

Fantastic information! Will buy the book as well.

I know some didn't like the narrator, but I did. I didn't find her voice robotic. I've heard her on fiction stories and she's more emotive there, so she may have wanted to create a less expressive feeling for a scientific book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fact this neuroscientist uses the Bible to back up her findings. I found the information was packed full, that I should've taken notes in a book. I think this book would be best in a book format over audio so you can highlight important pieces (there were so many) and put notes in there as well. There is so much information that listening to it could become easily forgotten.
I did find some of her comments to be a bit too salesy when she markets her other products... Like " You can see this demonstrated if you buy my dvd..." sort of comments. It would've been better in a format that accompanied a workbook rather than trying to sell the consumer another product for the same book. I also wished she went over examples on how to apply the 21 day detox as it seemed more vague rather than providing practical examples on how to apply this daily... at least it did on the audio.

However, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how thinking affects our brain- physically as well as mentally. How we can get into 'ruts' and seem unable to break free from all of that. And how we are not as powerless to deal with these toxic thoughts as we once thought we were. But she does stress it must take a lot of work - practice and dedication to actively change your thinking. And it doesn't happen overnight to become a habit.

I would buy more of her books, just maybe not in audio.

True Science

I am fascinated with neuroscience however most authors forget the Designer. Dr Leaf uses the latest scientific discoveries to highlight the ancient instructions for life found in The Holy Bible. I found this book insightful, easy to listen to and understand with practical steps to apply the teaching. I highly recommend this manual.
