Publisher's Summary

Twelve-year-old Sunny lives in Nigeria, but she was born American. Her features are African, but she has albinism. She's a terrific athlete but can't go out into the sun to play soccer. There seems to be no place where she fits in.

And then she discovers something amazing - she is a "free agent" with latent mystical power. Soon she's part of a quartet of students studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality. But will it be enough to help them when they are asked to catch a career criminal well-versed in powerful juju?

What the critics say

"Nnedi Okorafor is opening doors into strange and beautiful new worlds. Her heroes are beguiling, her magic firmly rooted in real places and real things. Rich, mysterious, and convincing, Akata Witch takes fantasy in a haunting new direction." (Jonathan Stroud, New York Times best-selling author of The Bartimaeus Trilogy)

I couldn't stop listening

I repeatedly found myself standing in the middle of doing something and staring into space just listening and seeing this amazing world play like a movie in my head. I will be reading everything written by this author as quickly as I can get my hands on it. Vivid, imaginative and captivating. I will be listening to this one again, after the next 2 in the series of course. 10/10 highly recommend, especially for ladies of any age or anyone who has ever felt apart from, not seen, or questioned who they are.

Another amazing novel by Okorafor

Okorafor is an incredible writer. Her characters are complex and interesting, but what she does best is world-building. Her abiiity to create and write fictional worlds that merge the real world with ancient and contemporary myths. Indeed, what I love about all Okorafor's work is how her imagined worlds disrupt and dismantle patriarchal and white hegemonic ideas, structures, and language. While her Binti series is my favourite, I love Akata Witch (I have yet to read the others that follow) because it brings her imaginings to a younger audience. The narrators are both great! My only critique is that in a few places the voices became indistinguishable.

YESYESYESYESYESYESYES

FINALLY. A book about witches that is about the arcane and the strange, spoken in hushed tones. I love it. I'm only a couple of hours in but it's so so good so far. If you're not as much a fan of a slow build be patient because it gets super great <3 Will 1000% recommend to anyone who will listen :D

So so so good!

This story is everything a person could want from a fun, adventurous YA fantasy novel and then so much more.
The characters are irresistible. The world they live in is rich and detailed and keeps you on your toes. The writing is smart and engaging. The narrator is fantastic.
Plus - a story about magic that isn't set in Europe or the US!!
The sequel is also amazing. I can't wait for more.

The reviewer who said they wanted a movie is totally right - that would be spectacular.

loved it so much! I'm ready for the movie franchise with the costumes designed by the costume designer of Black Panther!
