Publisher's Summary

Aila Quinn's mother, Juliet, has always been a mystery. Vibrant yet guarded, she keeps her secrets beyond Aila's reach. When Juliet dies, Aila and her younger brother, Miles, are sent to live in Sterling, a rural town with mysteries of its own. In Sterling, the experiences that weave life together - scents of flowers and food, reflections from mirrors and lakes, even the ability to dream - vanish every seven years. No one knows what causes these Disappearances or what will slip away next. But it has always been suspected that Juliet was somehow responsible, so Aila, bearing the brunt of that blame, follows the chain of literary clues her mother left behind. As the next Disappearance nears, Aila begins to unravel the dual mystery of why the Disappearances happen and who her mother truly was. One thing is clear: Sterling isn't going to hold on to anyone's secrets for long.

Different concept

At first I found it hard to get into but I’m glad I persevered because it was definitely worth it! I love that it’s a story I haven’t heard a thousand times before. Well written and well done.

Teens save the day!!!! Wooohoooo

A combination of Nancy Drew and Wesley Crusher figure out what no one else could. Even though they were surrounded for years by highly intelligent (?) adults. Was this a « young adult » book? Felt like it, or more to the point, felt like it was written by a high school English student, and not a great one.
Wasn’t all bad, started out okay and then degraded with at least one MAJOR inconsistency. (Aren’t these books edited ?)
Then it seemed like the author wanted to tie things up in a hurry. The ending, or resolution, left a lot of questions unanswered. And the sudden about face of one of the characters was totally unbelievable. Without giving too much away, the « escape « …. again, unbelievable.
Found the narrator to be lack lustre as well. All the voices sounded too similar and bland.

I really enjoyed this story.

Great characters and interesting plot with good development. Well performed. I liked the incorporation of Shakespeare.

The reader

Although I enjoyed the story , the reader was not able to vary her voice to sound like male characters. It made it difficult to follow at times.

long...

At times it feels long. The narrator sounds too much like "7 of 9" on Star Trek Voyager for me to enjoy it. At the end of chapter 42 I gave up, skipped to the last three and listened to those to finish.
