Something dark and evil has awakened....

Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City - and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It's 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.

Evie worries her uncle will discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.

As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho is hiding a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened....

Delightful

Very creepy and compelling. Great set of characters and for a YA novel, great representation.

Very good!

I enjoyed it. Libba Bray definitely puts effort into her prose beyond the plot. Nice world-building around the characters. A memorable world.

Very Buffy-the-Vampire-Slayer-esque (urban fantasy, plucky blonde, bookish mentor, library-type headquarters where research happens, etc.). I don't mind that because I adore Buffy.

*Slight rant about Y-A "romance": I really wish writers of young adult urban fantasy would get away from hackneyed and cheaply-won love triangle "romance". It's not strongly flavored here (thank gawd), but it is present and being set up for more in the following books. I wish it wasn't deemed a necessary ingredient in all things teen-fantasy/sci-fi. Thanks so much Twilight! And while I know it's an ingredient in Buffy, execution is everything. I don't have to listen to Buffy's thoughts and yearnings being described ad nauseum. The Diviners aside, Y-A "romance" in general has so much tell-don't-show! It's done well when it's far more subtle and the heroine is a fully realized character beyond what any man thinks of her. Romance should be hard-won through genuine conflict and not shallow, brooding teen-age angst. Blah... I could go on, but I digress. I LIKE THIS BOOK and it's not overdoing that stuff to the point of deal-breaking.

I like the large cast of characters, the POV shifts, and how they don't even all know each other yet. It raises expectations for an awesome "scooby gang" in future books. We'll see...

Audiobook narrator January LaVoy does a wonderful fully-voiced performance. Will continue the series at some point.

Brilliant

A must read for those who love mystery, supernatural, and 1920s. I couldn't listen to it at night for it was too scary. I loved it.

Great story telling

January LaVoy delivers a wonderful narration, and Libba Bray delivers a wonderful story.

I love the time period in which this story is set, and that Libba Bray went out of her way to do so much research to make her story that much more enjoyable and reflective of the time period. The character development was fantastic and I could easily envision the place, the people, the smells, sounds, and sights.

I really recommend this book if you're looking for an entertaining, easy but interesting listen. It surely held my interest, and I'm onto book two now!
