Story
It’s October in Montreal, 2002, and winter is coming on fast. Past due on his first freelance gig and ensnared in lies to his family and friends, a graphic design student with a gambling addiction goes after the first job that promises a paycheck: dishwasher at the sophisticated La Trattoria. Though he feels out of place in the posh dining room, warned by the manager not to enter through the front and coolly assessed by the waitstaff in their tailored shirts, nothing could have prepared him for the tension and noise of the kitchen, or the dishpit’s clamor and steam.

Entertaining Psychological Suspense
Psychological suspense. Kept me listening. Ended up being rather soap opera ish and almost tied up too neatly in the end. But entertaining. The narrator did her best to do many voices, male, female, children, accents.

The story & characters held me!
I have never read a book by Lucinda Riley but I’ll be reading more of her books after The Angel Tree. In-depth characters, intense story that was very hard to put down. The narrator was excellent! This book was in the murder/mystery section but I’m left wondering why. I do recommend this book but do not except a who-done-it.

Not for me
I ordered this because of the good reviews and the fact that it was on sale. I found I could not relate to most of the characters in the book. I like strong protagonists. Or at the very least, people who grow and change throughout the book, people who learn something from their trials and tribulations. Many of the characters were not honest with themselves or others. And I quite dislike women who depend on male characters to save and protect them (as well as the males who think that’s their job).
The narrator did a poor job of American accents and the male voices in the book. I found her rendering to be stereotypical and overdramatic.
But hey, that’s just me.

Surprisingly Good!
Hesitated in purchasing this book because there were so few reviews, but so glad I took the chance. Although the story was not real suspenseful, it was both in depth and had great character development. Also, narration was incredible! J.B. did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. I actually grew to care for them, and wanted to find out what happened to each of them. Story was definitely long, but the time still passed quickly. Try it out, and do not think you will be disappointed with the purchase.

Characters elicited no sympathy
What disappointed you about The Angel Tree?
The main character was so unsympathetic. She was a weak woman who couldn't see beyond her own warped view. I could not understand why the male character found her so attractive. She was insipid both as a young and old woman. I haven't slogged through the last five hours so perhaps she will redeem herself. The supporting characters were engaging.
What could Lucinda Riley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
She should have done some research. At the time period, the studio system in Hollywood, as well as morality clauses we're thing of the past. I also don't believe a schizophrenic can go fifteen years without a psychotic episode.
What three words best describe Julia Barrie’s performance?
Not too bad. Overall was OK but American male characters were not very good.
What character would you cut from The Angel Tree?
I hate to say it but the main one, Greta.
Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed several books by this author so I was surprised that this one was so slapdash.

Great but..
I really love L.R.s writing and this is once again a captivating story that kept me awake several nights. I just find it a bit too superficial when it comes to all the money issues. Where does all the Marchmont money come from? everyone knows that all big mansions and farms nowadays are very expensive to run. When Ceska spends 'a lot' on hotel suites and at Harrod's she takes the money from the Marchmont account and in the end after the fire the book says that the insurance money is not important ... I reckon money is not at all the issue in the book but it kind of makes it a little bit shallow .
