Description

Number One National Best Seller

The number one best-selling Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is back with an exceptional Cold War thriller from the dark heart of the Space Race.

“An exciting journey to an alternate past.” (Andy Weir, author of The Martian)

“Nail-biting.” (James Cameron, writer and director of Avatar and Titanic)

“Not to be missed.” (Frederick Forsyth, author of The Day of the Jackal)

“Explosive.” (Gregg Hurwitz, author of Orphan X)

“Exciting, authentic.” (Linwood Barclay, author of Find You First)

1973. A final, top-secret mission to the Moon. Three astronauts in a tiny module, a quarter of a million miles from home. A quarter of a million miles from help.

As Russian and American crews sprint for a secret bounty hidden away on the lunar surface, old rivalries blossom and the political stakes are stretched to breaking point back on Earth. Houston flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis must do all he can to keep the NASA crew together, while staying one step ahead of his Soviet rivals. But not everyone on board Apollo 18 is quite who they appear to be.

Full of the fascinating technical detail that fans of The Martian loved, and reminiscent of the thrilling claustrophobia, twists and tension of The Hunt for Red October, The Apollo Murders puts you right there in the moment. Experience the fierce G-forces of launch, the frozen loneliness of Space and the fear of holding on to the outside of a spacecraft orbiting the Earth at 17,000 miles per hour, as told by a former Commander of the International Space Station who has done all of those things in real life.

Strap in and count down for the ride of a lifetime.

Ce que les critiques en disent

#1 National Bestseller

One of Indigo's Best Books of the Year 2021

"A nail-biting Cold War thriller set against a desperate Apollo mission that never really happened...or did it? It’s a very rare book that combines so many things I love, from taut suspense and highly realistic action, to the golden age of space exploration. I couldn't put it down.” (James Cameron, writer and director of Avatar and Titanic)

“An explosive thriller from a writer who has actually been to space and back.... Strap in for the ride.” (Gregg Hurwitz, New York Times best-selling author of the Orphan X novels)

“There’s maybe one person on Earth with the writing chops and the expertise to write a to-the-moon thriller this exciting, this authentic. Chris Hadfield is that guy.” (Linwood Barclay, New York Times best-selling author of Find You First

Is there anything he CAN’T do??

Because it wasn’t enough to be a test pilot former ISS commander most decorated Canadian astronaut musician ever … Chris Hadfield decided it wasn’t enough to write a very good non-fiction book , but that he needed to write fiction too! And this is some excellent science fiction.

This book is very much in the same vibe as Andy Weir (with the same great narrator), rooted of course in real science.

If you are a fan of The Martian and Project Hail Mary, you will love this book!

Not that great

It's simply not a good book. I can only assume the Audible high score is related to the accolades of the author, and not the quality of the actual book.

There aren't any characters that you can connect with. Each one makes poor decisions, spend the entire novel trying to solve mysteries that are obvious, or just aren't good characters. Without going into spoilers, there just isn't any character that I enjoyed.

The story drags on quite a bit, and the poor decision making is very jarring. it just feels so unnatural, it doesn't make sense in context. The book goes in directions that are set up to cause drama, but if you take a step back, you realize super smart NASA characters, or American military characters, oversee the most basic aspects of their training and common sense to get themselves in these situations. There should have been minimal issues in the book if you remove these large holes.

if you're interested in Space-based stories, I highly suggest Andy Wier. The Martian is of course great, but my top recommendation would be Hail Mary. I even enjoyed Artemis more than The Apollo Murders, unfortunately.

The performer, Ray Porter, is excellent, as always, despite the poor source material.

This will be a movie one day. Best Spent Credit!

As i sit here in my car on Chris Hadfield way in Milton, Ontario i am completely in awe of how good this book is. This man knows his stuff and can spin a tale with just enough believability to have you thinking it might have just happened. you wont get outlandishly unrealistic Hollywood action scenes, instead more plausible and yet more exciting narrative that puts you right in mission control and the spaceships themselves with excellent voicework by the one and only Ray Porter. 5 stars all around.

OK. Some plot holes

First of all, it's impressive that Chris Hadfield wrote a thriller.
I enjoyed the characters and the setting, of course, is amazing.
The plot, however, is just OK.
I don't want to give anything away but there are some plot holes here that are fairly large and I was left wondering why a particular character did what he did when the motivation/purpose is left unclear. You might also wonder how some fairly basic information about the main antagonist went undiscovered for so long until that character does bad things. Wouldn't they have investigated his background before he rose to such a position of power?
Parts of the book just don't seem to make a lot of sense.
The characters are well created as is the narration.
I was left with the feeling that maybe Chris needed a bit more time in the editors office, going over the story arcs a bit.

Similar quality to 'The Martian' by Andy Weir

In both cases, it's the author's first public book of fiction, featuring characters who are skilled experts in space travel. In both cases, the details of the challenges are clearly explained, with no conflicts being lazily resolved by ignorant guesswork of the author. (Both have a deliberate inaccuracy of science as a main plot point though, which is a different matter altogether.) Finally, both books are narrated by the same person, who succeeds in consistently giving each character their own unique voice.

Whereas 'The Martian' is based on space travel of the near future, 'The Appolo Murders' is based on the non-existent space mission of Appolo 18, and around the people and details of that Era. In short, both are highly reccomded. 🍁

When did Tom Clancy go to Space?

This is not a SciFi. This is a full on Spy Thriller that rivals the work of the great Tom Clancy that happens to take place in Space. i was completely hooked the entire time i got out of my car and just walked around with it playing aloud because was so captivated.

Exciting space thriller - can’t wait for the next one!

Chris Hadfield is an incredible human, teacher, musician, pilot, scientist, astronaut and now, author. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I pre-ordered this book, but did so based on his likability and CV. As an avid mystery and thriller audiobook reader, I was very satisfied to realize that I was completely immersed in the story, as I would be with a Daniel Silva, Candice Fox or James Patterson story. What I really appreciated was the skilful way Hadfield enlightened his audience in the finer points of space travel, as he’s experienced firsthand. I cannot wait for his next novel!
