Publisher's Summary

The Brave Athlete solves the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don't have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look.

What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? You can.

The Brave Athlete from Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson will help you take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport.

Dr. Marshall is a sport psychology expert who trains the brains of elite professional athletes. Paterson is a three-time world champion triathlete and coach. Together, they offer this innovative brain training guide that is the first to draw from both clinical science and real-world experience with athletes.

Meh

Idk, it’s really informally written and I just didn’t vibe with it. Didn’t feel like I was getting new information.

A definite must for any athlete

I love this book! It was concise and very easy to understand. it gave me a lot of tools that I could use in the real world. The best thing about the book was it took a serious subject and made it fun to listen to the humour was great.

Fantastic!

This was such an entertaining book while also being jam-packed with science and incredibly helpful analogies. I was literally laughing out loud at times. I found it so useful that I actually just bought a hard copy so I can read it again and share it with my friends. Highly highly recommended!

Great Base to Work From!

This is simply written and easily digestible. Great launch point on an array of athletic mindset topics. Highly recommend.

Great listen for any sport or job

I loved it. While the authors give examples specifically for triathletes, the lessons can be translated to most sports.

I rather enjoyed the wit and humour of the authors, which is helped by the fact the audiobook is narrated by them, capturing their voice and tone properly.

I enjoyed most of this book

Most of the book was very informative to me; I just didn’t enjoy the couple of chapters on food and exercise addition issues but only because they don’t pertain to me. Overall, it was very interesting and gave lots of tools to enhance performance etc. 👍

Practical and enjoyable

The authors did a wonderful job of providing enough of the science to explain the psychological battles and did so in such a way that it was both understandable and amusing. Leaves the reader with lots to think about as well as several take home points that can be incorporated into your athletic practice. I am a professional athlete (which before this book I had trouble saying), and although my sport is vastly different from triathlons I found this book very applicable and recommend it to anyone. And I mean anyone, regardless of whether you are an athlete or afraid of public speaking or anything in between. This book had something for everyone.

Probably better as a book than as an audiobook

The numerous references to the bonus pdf made it a bit annoying to listen to. I had to remember to go look at it later, when I wasn’t doing something else (which is usually my reason to listen to an audiobook in the first place!) There are numerous exercises that the authors want us to do, but these aren’t read out loud in the audio version.
Also, I don’t know what I was expecting, but pretty much all the book has to do with actual competitions and races which I rarely do.

time I'll never get back.

Well I didn't think I was fucked up until I listened to this. I thought it would help motivate through an injurty. Not until the final chapters do they talk about how to actually cope. Save yourself some time skip to the last couple chapters.
