Story
A queen now in exile as a traitor, Lara has watched Ithicana be conquered by her own father, helpless to do anything to stop the destruction. But when she learns her husband, Aren, has been captured in battle, Lara knows there is only one reason her father is keeping him alive: as bait for his traitorous daughter. And it is bait she fully intends to take. Risking her life to the Tempest Seas, Lara returns to Ithicana with a plan not only to free its king, but for liberating the Bridge Kingdom from her father’s clutches using his own weapons: the sisters whose lives she spared.

Publisher's Summary
Prequel to the USA Today best-selling and Goodreads Choice finalist Stolen Songbird.
Below Forsaken Mountain, a plot is being hatched to overthrow the tyrant king of Trollus, and Marc is the right-hand man of its leader. His involvement is information more than one troll would kill to possess, which is why he must keep it a secret from everyone, even the girl he loves.
After accidentally ruining her sister's chance to become queen, Pénélope is given one last opportunity by her father, the Duke d'Angoulême, to make herself useful: she must find proof that the boy she's in love with is conspiring against the crown. If she fails, her life will be forfeit.
Marc and Pénélope must navigate the complex politics of Trollus, where powers on all sides are intent on using them as pawns, forcing them to risk everything for a chance at a life together.
Except being together may turn out to be the greatest risk of all.

Nostalgic but nothing new
I read the reviews and knew it wasn't great and that was true. It was nice going back to the same universe as Stolen Songbird which I loved but this story didn't add much depth or have the same pizazz as her other books.

A-MAZE-ING!!!!!!!
I cannot speak highly enough of this book and of the series as a whole. It is one of my favorites if not my favorite overall. That is saying a lot because I read A LOT AND listen to A LOT of great books! please listen to The Malediction Series first and then come back to this prequel!!! this book gives us more insight into the characters and adds a whole new perspective to the story! Danielle Jensen is brilliant with character development and intricate plots! never a full moment!!! I love this world and the characters and I would love more stories from more characters! after listening to this story I have begun listening to Stolen Songbird again (book 1 of the trilogy). I HAVE NEVER LISTENED TO A BOOK FOR A SECOND TIME!!! I felt as if listening again with the new information from this prequel would make it feel brand new again, and I was right!!! please add this book and the series to your list! you won't regret it!!!!

This was just sad & horrible.
**Spoilers **
I wished I would have gone by my gut instinct and not have listened to the prequel book to the series but because I absolutely loved her series The Bridge Kingdom I thought this would be similar but it was just dark and nothing happy about it at all! I, in fact skipped towards the tragic end (which I should have known didn't have a HEA) and regretted ever buying this book. The narrators were great but over all terrible with a tragic dealth (MC)!

Sweet and sour
The performance was great as usual.
I went through the Malediction Trilogy as fast as I could possibly listen. I just didn't feel that excitement in this book.
The story is great. There is just less action and suspense. It's of course focused mainly on Marc and Penelope.
I think knowing what will eventually happen to a main character soured it a bit for me, but that's a prequel for you!
Overall, knowing the entirety of Marc's backstory with Penelope makes his character so much more real. Hearing how Tristan is really changed by their relationship instead of told second hand in Malediction Trilogy definitely makes a difference.
I really enjoyed it!!!

A great addition to the series
A wonderful book. Na amazing beginnig to The Malediction Triology. Althought this book has been release after the conclusion, this book tell us how so many things starts, like the business relationship between Tristan and Anais, the rebelion, Marc’s dadness..
About the narration, I can say was very good, and made the book enjoyable. Perfect.

READ THIS BOOK FIRST!!!!
This book....THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC! There is some debate in reviews about whether or not to read the prequel first. By reading this book first I had a good understanding on the main characters and how they played into the next books. I just finished the Bridge Kingdom series and loved it so much so I was looking for something else by Danielle Jenson because I didn't want to let them go! This book did not disappoint. I wanted a different outcome, but the love was so pure, beautiful and MAGICAL! Also at the end of this book there is a chapter leading into Stolen Songbird you do not want to miss.

Having just finished another trilogy of hers, I was expecting triumph in the end, but now I don't think I'll even try the second book. heavy heart over here!!
