Publisher's Summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden.

In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious “butterflies” - young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

When the garden is discovered, a survivor is brought in for questioning. FBI agents Victor Hanoverian and Brandon Eddison are tasked with piecing together one of the most stomach-churning cases of their careers. But the girl, known only as Maya, proves to be a puzzle herself.

As her story twists and turns, slowly shedding light on life in the Butterfly Garden, Maya reveals old grudges, new saviors, and horrific tales of a man who’d go to any length to hold beauty captive. But the more she shares, the more the agents have to wonder what she’s still hiding...

Amazing world building

The world building in the story is just amazing, you really get to feel and understand the butterfly garden from the points of view that are shared to the reader. I will say that the twist is a little bit boring and I will say that the climax is a little dull. But the rest of the storytelling is able to forgive that, definitely recommend it if you are into world building and story detail.

satisfying

This was a great summer listen/read, an entertaining, unsophisticated serial killer thriller, with a delightfully silly premise. Yeah, there is stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense, it's not exactly intricately plotted and carefully researched, but it's written well enough, and it's a lot of fun.
I liked that the story starts at the end, once the bad guys have been caught and they're trying to figure out exactly what happened. I'm not a huge fan of kidnapping stories, but this set up took the stress out of it. The characters are interesting, and even though you kind of know how it's going to end at the beginning, you still want to know how it gets there.

Disturbing but so good

Quite disturbing storyline but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. The details were well executed and scary but gave a good mental picture.

Good but could have been great

I loved the narration, having two gender parties instead of just one was a nice change. I did however wish it would have been darker. They should have put in alot more detail about the butterflies deaths which I think is a very important part of the novel!

It was good

It was a interesting story. Nothing too deep or scary in detail. The concept was interesting and I looked forward to see how it would unfurle. Like others, I didn't think the last twist part at end really added anything to the book, But all in all this was a mildly dark good read.

Book is fantastic had some issues with performance

So this book is very good. It’s engaging, has complex characters, solid story structure and is creepy in the best way. However I didn’t like how the performance was done. Using one Narrator for one part and switch to another for the other was strange and took me out of the moment. Both narrators did a good job but the way it was formatted just didn’t make sense to me

Sad but reaaally entertaining

I loved this book, I couldn’t stop listening. If you like weird books like me, then this is for you. I’ve read a bunch of books about abduction or captivity (like I said, I like weird books :P) and this is definitely one of the most interesting stories. #Audible1

Enjoyable book, potentially triggering, bad ending

The concept for the story was unique and interesting, although a big drawn out. The protagonist was likeable to an extent. I don't think it was overly reflective of what it would be like in such a psychologically disturbing place. Definite trigger warning for rape, sexual violence, and sexual coercion. The ending had so much potential, and I was expecting a big, dark twist. Alas, the twist was stupid and irrelevant. Hardly even consider it a twist I guess.

The story was great, the performance was brutal

Normally if I really dislike the performer I can’t get through the book, but this book was definitely worth pushing through it. The female narrator was great, but the male narrator was frustrating to listen to as he made the main character sound nasally and whiny anytime he voiced her (which you know she’s not- because you hear her side of the story from the female narrator, and also that’s not her personality) it was a very weird contrast and the I spent the entire book wishing it would go back to the female narrator. I’m glad I heard this book though, it was a wild ride from start to finish, I couldn’t have guessed any of it, I really cared about the characters and could have listened to so much more of this story!

Highly recommend

Although many people found this book creepy or unsettling I found it sad and dark this book made me realize the obsession with love and memories and the pain that they can hold this book showed how infatuation and live are extremely different and how mistaking infatuation for love is truly devastating I really enjoyed this book but there is definitely a sensor if you are extreamly sensitive to rape and torture I would think hardly about reading this in my opinion the ending wasn’t horrible I just think it wasn’t the greatest way to end such a deep and sad story but definitely a 9.5/10 from me
