Story
She's always watching.... When Guy finds the deeds to a house in his mother's attic, it seems like an incredible stroke of luck. Sure, the building hasn't been inhabited in 40 years and vines strangle the age-stained walls, but Guy is convinced he can clean it up and sell it. He'd be crazy to turn down free money. Right? The house is hours from any other habitation, and Guy can't get phone reception in the old building. He decides to camp there while he does repairs. Surely nothing too bad can happen in the space of a week. But there's a reason no one lives in Rookward House, and the dilapidated rooms aren't as empty as they seem....

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. Publisher's Summary
"The dead are restless here...."
Remy is a tour guide for Carrow House, a notoriously haunted building. When she's asked to host seven guests for a week-long stay to research Carrow's phenomena, she hopes to finally experience some of the sightings that made the house famous.
At first, it's everything they hoped for. Then a storm moves in, cutting off their contact with the outside world, and things quickly become twisted. Doors open on their own. Seances go disastrously wrong. Red liquid seeps from behind the wallpaper. Their spirit medium wanders through the house during the night, seemingly in a trance.
Then one of the guests dies under strange circumstances, and Remy is forced to consider the possibility that the ghost of the house's original owner, a twisted serial killer, still walks the halls.
But by then it's too late to escape.

Really good - exceeded expectations!
This was my first book by Darcy Coates and I think I've found a new favourite author! I've been struggling for so long to find a good spooky book with a captivating story that included many elements, and this book really satisfied all of my checkboxes for a good read (or listen). The narrator did a great job at capturing the tone as well! I will most likely listen to this again or even buy the hard copy!

Frightening Scary Good.
I really enjoyed this book. it grabs you right from the beginning. It makes you feel like your apart of the story. It's scary,😱 and frightening, Some of the characters are a trip. I have listened to a few books by Darcy Coates and I think she has talent with her writing. I loved the character Remi, and the fact DC wrote her as a strong take charge woman. Amanda Leigh Cobb did an fantastic job in her narration of the characters. Exspecially Remi's and the young girl who owns the Mansion. I look forward in listening to Darcy Coates new books that become available to adubile soon.I recommend this book.🙂

Just enough spookyness
I really enjoyed the story. It had just the right amount of spookyness and was very well narrated by Amanda Leight Cobb. Very distinctive voices and built up suspense amazingly. Story had good twists and kept me interested until the very end!

Uninspired
I keep searching for a scary haunted house book, and it's so hard to find a good one! Knowing that, I give them more leeway than other genres. This is my second (and last) Darcy Coates book; her writing is just not very good (apologies to Ms. Coates). I listened to ten chapters of this book and turned it off with an eye-roll. THE SET UP Haunted house with really interesting back-story used now only for guided tours. Tour guide asked to stay in the house for two weeks with a group of people for research. WEAKNESSES - Poor character development. Flat, cookie-cutter characters. Painfully stereotypical. Spongebob Squarepants' characters are more complex - and I'm not even kidding. - Basic dialogue. Nothing interesting at all. - Good story made boring: author glossed over the most interesting elements of the story (there *is* a good premise buried in there somewhere) and weighed the book down with boring details. - Pacing. If anything scary happens, it isn't within the first 10 chapters. - Narration. A professional-sounding voice actor, just not a good fit for the book. Chirpy tone better suited for a bodice-ripper, and over-done character voices (17 year old girl sounded 12; 60-ish woman sounded 95). Just a heavy-handed and decidedly un-scary effort all around. Check these out instead (not perfect, but solidly creepy): Lineage - Joe Hart Kill Creek - Scott Thomas The Good House - Tananarive Due Good Luck!

One of Darcy Coates better Books
I love Darcy Coates and have read or listened to all of her books and always am thrilled when a new book shows up on Audible. Her past couple of books were a little on the blah side but this one was well written and hard to put down. It was a little reminiscent of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. But Christie is pretty tame compared to Coates' evil spirits and creepy atmosphere. I thought the ending was a tad too "nice" and think I would have liked it better if the few remaining survivors came out of the nightmare traumatized. I don't want to spoil this for anyone but let me say, the ending could have been darker and the book would probably have been even better and more unsettling.

Scooby doobie doo, Where are you?
I was seriously waiting for a guy in a bad mask to pop up with "And I'd have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids". As a self styled haunted house fiction afficianado all I can say is BOO, there, I was just twice as scary as this boring tome. I wish I'd bought it on kindle, then I could have skipped 3/4ths of the book. The story was very predictable, if you've never read horror fiction before and English is your third language and you're a little drunk you might enjoy it. The narration would have been ok but for the editing which left me wondering "who was she talking about".

One of the best books
I decided to listen to this book because a review said it was like Agatha Christie's book"And Then There Were None" and I love that movie and book so I decided to listen to it. I'm very glad I did. In my opinion it is one of the best books I have listened to. The story was excellent and the Narrator was fantastic. I can't say that the story was extremely scary but it was scary enough. Had a some twists. I didn't want the story to end. That's how I know I really love a book. I love Haunted house stories and this on was very good.
