Publisher's Summary

The Chrysalids is set in the future after a devastating global nuclear war. David, the young hero of the novel, lives in a tight-knit community of religious and genetic fundamentalists, always on the alert for any deviation from the norm of God's creation.

Abnormal plants are publicly burned, with much singing of hymns. Abnormal humans (who are not really human) are also condemned to destruction - unless they succeed in fleeing to the Fringes, that Wild Country where, as the authorities say, nothing is reliable and the devil does his work.

David grows up ringed by admonitions: KEEP PURE THE STOCK OF THE LORD; WATCH THOU FOR THE MUTANT.

At first he does not question. Then, however, he realizes that he, too, is out of the ordinary, in possession of a power that could doom him to death or introduce him to a new, hitherto unimagined world of freedom.

The Chrysalids is a perfectly conceived and constructed work from the classic era of science fiction, a Voltairean philosophical tale that has as much resonance in our own day, when religious and scientific dogmatism are both on the march, as when it was written during the Cold War.

lovely

it was a great book, a bit repetitive but overall really great.

I feel that it was dragged on more than necessary in certain areas but, in the end it came together very nicely.

Neat storyline!

I think this book was definitely interesting and entertaining. Although, it did take awhile for the storyline to progress. However, once it did it was suspenseful and thrilling. The concept was very different from anything I've ever read!

Enjoyed rereading this classic...

The climax is less than expected, the ending feels rushed... but the questions and thoughts provoked are well worth it.

Appreciated even more the second time!

Good reading of great story

This is such a classic novel and I am glad the audiobook measured up. My husband had never read the book and found the audiobook very easy to follow.

This is how a post apocalyptic story should go

I'm not a huge fan of post apocalyptic stories, they tend to have too much in common. This said i must say i liked this one. In the style how its written you can feel its from 50 years ago and that can get a little annoying. i started reading this because i loved some of this writers other work and I don't regret it.
