Evans interweaves a broad narrative of the war’s progress with viscerally affecting personal testimony from a wide range of people - from generals to front-line soldiers, from Hitler Youth activists to middle-class housewives. The Third Reich at War lays bare the dynamics of a nation more deeply immersed in war than any society before or since. Fresh insights into the conflict’s great events are here, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Stalingrad to Hitler’s suicide in the bunker.

Histoire
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

The 14th century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague.

Description
Here is the final volume of the highly acclaimed narrative history named one of the best nonfiction books of the century by National Review.
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.
The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3 brings to a close the story of four years of turmoil and strife that altered American life forever.

Did not disappoint.
As an American Civil War buff, I looked for this series of books for nay 40 years. I was so thrilled to discover it on Audible. It has been an incredible 150-hour journey, fulfilling my deepest desires.
The narration is superb.

Masterfully told history
Foote is a great story teller and does an admirable job of sifting through the mass of information available to pull out the choicest bits of battles big and small, military and political, to weave into an engrossing narrative.
For those not familiar with the geography it is useful to consult a map of the grand maneuvers and battlefields.
The only criticism that might be levelled is at the narrator's pronunciation of some words and place names. The fault may be mine, however, in not knowing what the local pronunciation is. Perhaps Cairo IS pronounced "KAY-row" in Mississippi?

A Marathon But Worth It
The book and the story told is amazing. The late Mr. Foote's writing style is so complimentary to the subject matter he is working from. Yes, the book is very long, but I found it very enjoyable.
Mr. Gardner's dramatization of the historic characters and his vocal work was superb, and I really enjoyed listening to it.
The 3 books together are over 160 hours of listening pleasure, but well worth the marathon.
