Gabriel Bergmoser offers an action-heavy novella about a jaded ex-cop-turned-vigilante engaged in a personal mission for justice. 'Jack Carlin' steals Mexican Cartel money to give to a low-level drug dealer/one-time informant.. triggering violent reprisals. The plotting and dialogue is screenplay-worthy, but failed to captivate me. Bergmoser paints his protagonist as a 'Jack Reacher'-type superman but makes him so personally-flawed (ie. self-serving & "dirty") that I couldn't buy the "anti-hero" persona. Bergmoser furthermore goes too far in creating an indestructible one-man-taking-on-the-mob character (I can just imagine the masturbatory story planning: "..and then he can tell the capo to f**k off and kill two or three bodyguards").

As to presentation, Audible Studios (Australia) Inc. did well hiring Gregory Caine to read the book. His delivery is a little bit "sneering".. but he certainly understands the author's intentions and provides solidly professional narration. I judge the performance "above-average" overall.

Altogether, 'The Consequence' is a 6/10-star audiobook that would suit any fan of 'John Wick' or the 'Death Wish' film franchise. It was a decent distraction for a quiet afternoon for free.. but I wouldn't spend a Credit on it (spend it on some Lee Child or Vince Flynn).
