À propos de cet audio

“Steven Pacey’s performance brings the story to life. Listeners will be on the edge of their seats.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Full of easy banter, dry humor delivered with excellent comedic timing, and tender moments of sapphic romance, this audiobook's memorable characters are expertly realized in Pacey's narration.”—AudioFile (Earphones Award Winner)

A brand-new epic fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Joe Abercrombie, featuring a notorious band of anti-heroes on a delightfully bloody and raucous journey

Holy work sometimes requires unholy deeds.

Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters. The mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends.

Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it's a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.

“Full of easy banter, dry humor delivered with excellent comedic timing, and tender moments of sapphic romance, this audiobook’s memorable characters are expertly realized in Pacey’s narration.”—Locus Mag

Ce que les critiques en disent

The Devils is Joe Abercrombie at his best: exciting, witty, vicious. History buffs (like me!) will love the fantasy-historical setting overflowing with brilliant little details.”—Django Wexler, author of How to Become a Dark Lord and Die Trying

“Devilish fun, an unholy delight. Wielding his trademarked grit and stiletto-sharp prose, Abercrombie is at his bloody best weaving a tale of monstrous heroes who discover the humanity in themselves.”—Pierce Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, the first in a new series, is ferociously imagined, and rumbles along with the unstoppable force of a city-burying avalanche. It's also frequently shout-out-loud-with-laughter funny. When it comes to big, shamelessly entertaining fantasy, Abercrombie is in a class of his own.”—Joe Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box

Joe Abercrombie comes through again! Sift through the endless cookie cutter fantasy stories, the same tale over and over again. Joe Abercrombie and 1 or 2 others can actually tell a good story a really good story. By far and away my favourite author for many years. Great job and I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Joe Abercrombie is a master of story telling

Look, I found it a bit formulaic but the characters were good and it was well executed and of course well narrated.

A solid work of fiction

I imagine most will compare this entry to the 1st law series - which is not appropriate IMO. This is a new series, with a very different tone than his 9 novels in the 1st law universe.

This is a LOL, violent, action packed fantasy novel. Joe brings themes like the poison of organized religion, power vs loyalty, regret, arrogance and friendship to this novel in both obvious and subtle ways.

Pacey as the narrator truly brings this novel to life. I doubt I would be as high on this novel had I read it.

The ending sets us up for an intriguing 2nd installment.

Where will Joe go with this excellent new series?

If there is a better writer of character in Fantasy I haven’t come across them. If there is a better narrator I haven’t heard them. If there is a more satisfying audiobook experience than the two of them together … well you get the idea.
Starting this book I was nervous and excited in equal measure. Nervous because how could anything live up to the lofty standards that Abercrombie has set with his novels and excited because the possibility that it has.
I was not disappointed. Abercrombie back in form with this book and I’m very pleased to say I enjoyed it as much or more than the his other offerings which I loved. It was amazing!

Abercrombie and Pacey do not disappoint

The evolution of Joe’s writing over the course of his first law books culminates in this fantastic new adventure that has made me fall in love with his witty writing again. The narrator excels in bringing each character to life and while the story stalls out in the latter half of the novel this is well worth the money.

Best book to date

Super enjoyable; a little predictable, but half the fun of Abercrombie’s writing is seeing how he leans on and mixes up genre conventions. This reads basically like Suicide Squad in an alt-medieval Europe. Funny, some complex characters and great dynamics, loads of blood and gore; the usual Abercrombie stuff. Steven Pacey’s narration is so good though that I actually can’t imagine encountering Abercrombie without it.

Abercrombie being Abercrombie, Pacey being magnificent
