It seemed the unthinkable had happened. Someone had actually targeted the Ghalian, an order of assassins known and feared across the systems. It was madness. Only a fool would go after the likes of them. But, it seemed, the galaxy had no shortage of fools. Retaliation most bloody was in order, and one man stood ready to spring into action. Hozark was his name, and he was no ordinary man. He was a Master Ghalian, an assassin skilled in the ways of death. Practical, mechanical, magical, to him it made no difference.

Aram thinks he’s nothing but a misfit from a small fishing village in a dark corner of the world. As far as Aram knows, he has nothing, with hardly a possession to his name other than a desire to make friends and be accepted by those around him, which is something he’s never known. But Aram is more. Much, much more. Unknown to him, Aram bears within him a gift so old and rare that many people would kill him for it, and there are others who would twist him to use for their own sinister purposes.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

He thinks himself invincible - right up till a mortal wound forces him to undergo a dangerous rebirthing spell, leaving him a helpless babe in human hands.
Twenty years pass, and demonic forces are poised to sweep across the land. With the alliance between humanity, dragons, and fairies fracturing, Darnuir will have to uncover the secrets of his past, seek redemption for his sins, and rally the disparate races if they are to survive.
Only Darnuir can do this. For, he's the last member of the royal bloodline, and only he can wield the Dragon's Blade.
His second chance is the world's last hope.

An epic adventure for all
A story about many different people and as many different personalities and values, all having to deal with each other, and themselves.
Engaging and perfectly paced writing style pared with an outstanding narrator, lead to many late nights, because I needed one more chapter.
I loath spoilers, so I won't give absolutely anything away. However, if you love some of the epics from fantasy, this trilogy is waiting for you!

Captivating Fantasy
Michael R. Miller clearly does NOT belong in the Fantasy-Writer Pantheon with Jordan, Sanderson, and R.R.Martin (or even Brooks/Mancour) - but he puts together a creditable imaginative scenario. In Miller's conception, a long-running war between Demons/Spectres (part of "The Shadow") and an alliance of Humans, Fairies, Tusked/Ape-like Trolls, anthropoid Dragons, and Wizards & Witches makes a familiar medieval-level-of-development "Sword & Sorcey" fantasy world interesting. Most striking - Miller adds the element of gunpowder.. nearly a match militarily for magic.. to the mix. It's a clever innovation.
Unfortunately, the author's other ideas aren't particularly original (I mean the bad guys are called "The Shadow"🙄) - and the philosophical reasoning & character motivation conflicts among the combatants are overemphasized - actually interfering with the overall plot progression
..but Miller's story is a reasonable distraction for a Fantasy-SciFi addict like myself and certainly provokes contemplation of his themes.
• Book One: 'The Reborn King' - tells of the resurrection of an egotistical Dragon Prince ('Darnuir') who was raised by humans after the Wizard 'Brackendon' saved him from death by turning him back into a baby. In this book, Darnuir grows up more realistic/empathetic, builds up alliances, and comes to grips with his largely forgotten destiny
• Book Two: 'Veiled Intentions' (starting at Chapter 39 in this recording) - is the most engrossing of the Trilogy. Miller goes in-depth into prejudices within alliances; further develops a fascinating Spectre-Lord bad guy that is uncharacteristically worth admiring ('Dookuna'); and draws distinctions between the unequivocally evil "Wants-To-See-The-World-Burn" God-like enemy 'Rectar' and the Saruman-clone traitorous/ambitious wizard 'Castallan'
• Book Three: 'The Last Guardian' - starts at Chapter 74 and concludes the Series with a climactic battle between Good and Evil - but complicates the narrative with story elements like loyalty & treachery among the humans; near Civil War & conflicts between Dragon religious factions; and mutiny among Rectar's forces. The result is the weakest of the Trilogy: an intriguing but messy book.
On the positive side, Dave Cruse does a remarkable job reading the book. Michael R. Miller Publishing ( yes, this is a self-published work) did well to employ Mr. Cruse for the project. He exhibits an occasionally annoying lilting, interrupted, staccato cadence - and some character voices are cartoonish.. but his diction, timbre, and especially tone are otherwise considerably above-average.
'The Dragon's Blade Trilogy' really should be considered one epic story - none of the entries is particularly capable of standing on it's own.. and each of books 1 & 2 end as though someone said "Okay. That's cool. Let's end that one there. Next.."
Audible is hence to be commended for offering this Trilogy as a single recording.. one worth your time. This occasionally drawn-out but cerebrally-satisfying epic merits 9 stars out of 10.
[ATTN PRODUCERS: This author dramatizes a ton of strategic meetings and employs frequent battle scenes sweeping across the landscape.. a PDF with maps would improve this product immeasurably]

Good book
It's clear from the prose that this is the author's first work, especially after reading 'Songs of Chaos' first. It's delightful knowing how much he's grown as a writer since this.
I'm glad I read this the way I did, going from one book to the next seamlessly. It made for a long audiobook, but a smoother listening experience.
Following Darniur's journey from an arrogant ass, to ignorant, and to the end was incredible. That is how you do character arcs, folks. The ending I thought I predicted was nowhere near as satisfying as what actually happened. I don't know if I'd call it a good ending, what with all the loose threads remaining. Sometimes, though, a satisfying ending trumps a happy one, and this is such a case.
If more books were written in this world, I'd read them. If not, I'm happy with the way things are.

Long way to go but a good journey
I really enjoyed this series, it was great to see a bit of a different spin on fantasy then typical DnD or LoTR orks, elves, dwarves and the like.
I found the story interesting, though typical save the world stuff it's what I expected and enjoyed the ride. I also cared about the characters and their arcs which I think makes the listen much more entertaining.

Dull
Dragons that aren't really dragons. Wizards and witches who are useless without a staff and not much better with one. A king that isn't a king without a magic sword. Why is everyone in this book so useless? Every main character needs a magic widget to make them special.
The first half of the first book is completely throwaway. Why waste your time making a main character that everyone hates just to give him amnesia and rewrite him?
The villains have silly names and make terrible tactical decisions. These guys are trying to rule the world. Why would they take a 20 year break when they're on the cusp of complete victory?
Returning this one.
