Story
Stan and Charmaine are a married couple trying to stay afloat in the midst of an economic and social collapse. Job loss has forced them to live in their car, leaving them vulnerable to roving gangs. They desperately need to turn their situation around—and fast. The Positron Project in the town of Consilience seems to be the answer to their prayers. No one is unemployed and everyone gets a comfortable, clean house to live in . . . for six months out of the year. Story
Part detective novel, part psychological thriller, Surfacing is the story of a talented woman artist who goes in search of her missing father on a remote island in northern Quebec. Setting out with her lover and another young couple, she soon finds herself captivated by the isolated setting, where a marriage begins to fall apart, violence and death lurk just beneath the surface, and sex becomes a catalyst for conflict and dangerous choices. Surfacing is a work permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose.

Story
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

really enjoyable
Really impressed with Atwood's delicious first novel. It digested well, and considering it's age it still seemed fresh. I'm always amazed how every word she writes has deeper meaning that keeps me thinking. Lorelei's narration was well done with very recognizable characters, that left me hungry for more.

Love it! Discover how was a young woman life in 1960. Independent and open minded attitude was not expected for a good wife...to be.

very enjoyable!!
I related to most of the characters in this book, odd though some of them are. The book was also more humorous than I expected.
Having been written in the 70s I think, I'm not sure if a younger person would find it as relatable.
The narrator was also very good!!

The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood
I haven't read this book since 1981 (when I read it for Grade 13 English). I was struck by the fact that in today's snowflake-ridden, politically correct climate NO school board would allow students to read a book with blatent sex, sexual themes, promiscuity etc. I'm glad I grew up in the 70s, drank out of the hose, washed my hair with dish soap and read Go Ask Alice in grade 6!!!

Riveting and relatable
I really enjoyed this listen. I haven’t read much of Margaret Atwood. I’m happy I started with this book and will go on to listen to more of her writing. She is an incredibly talented writer.
