What the critics say

"Dan Simmons was a star from the outset. It was the Hyperion books that made him a superstar. The man, quite simply, is what we in the trade call a writer's writer." (Mike Resnick, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author)
"State of the art science fiction...A landmark novel." (Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine)

Great sequel, one of the best!!

This story never ceases to impress.. the worlds created are unique and interesting.. and the function of the galaxy as a whole is so well thought out. My one gripe is that I wish there were a few more alien species.. even non sentient ones that would interact and affect the story. Aliens it appears have mostly been written out of the galaxy, explained briefly by quick exposition.

In terms of performance.. the narrator does a very good job juggling all the characters and sexes.. but I really wish it was a full cast. The full cast audio recordings just seem to immerse the listener in the story that much more.

If you like science fiction at all, with elements of time travel, mysticism, technology, love, warfare, and betrayal you will love this story.

An excellent space opera

Much like the first novel and doubtless the rest of the series, the story was compelling and complex. The narration was great, the characters were developed, and the plot was well thought out. This series is turning out to be a true exercise in escapism that still manages to be relatable.

Wish I’d read this years ago!

I’m not going to write a whole lot of hookah about how this was the best Sci Fi ever written, but I will say I thoroughly enjoyed it, and now have the whole series on audiobook.
Dan Simmons first work I ever read, was the last book I ever read with my eyes, when it became clear that no matter how great my bifocals might be, it’s just not going to get read that way any longer. that was The Terror, which is a fun and strange romp written back before any of the Terrors crew were ever found. It’s more almost horror, anyway, I enjoyed it. but this is way more my speed. Very good series, considering that Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion came out in 1989. Before most of us had personal computers and the Internet. What Simmons does well is translate to the spoken word, with enough descriptors to paint a picture fairly well and allow us to see what is happening. Switching to first person when we hear Johnny speak, and making use of different actors to read the narration. This is a good series, you need to read Hyperion in order to get this one, but if you choose I think you could stop here. I’m going to listen to another book on the go and then come back and do Endymion.

Victor Bevine is amazing

Victor delivers a performance, not a simple reading. story is fine and I will finish the series.

Perfect narrator for this novel

I really enjoyed this narrator, their tone matched the novel perfectly, and they provided just enough variation to the characters without overdoing it.
