J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

Publisher's Summary
Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.
The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.
In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

This narration is godly!
Lovely performance of one of my absolute favorite books, I hadn't re-read this book in the last ten years and was overdue, but I use my eyes a lot already working on a computer so I decided to give the audiobooks a go and I'm really happy with it.

Well performed, engaging to listen to
While the character voices weren’t always very clearly differentiated, this was an enjoyable audio book. It felt like a grandpa reading me the story and was so endearing to listen to. I would definitely recommend this version

Masterful book and a masterful reading.
It feels wholly unnecessary to review the contents of this book as it is widely regarded to be cemented as one of the greats; however, for those on the fence - what makes this a must have is the fantastic narration of the book.
Rob Inglis adds the right inflections to his reading and keeps the story captivating for the listener. Every character is done with a nuance that helps moments of heavy dialogue "flow" effortlessly (which may not sound entirely meaningful but is very important when listening to an audiobook).
I can't imagine another version that is unabridged surpassing this reading.

One Audiobook to rule them all
A Great book, and an excellent performance. I've read lots of criticism about the sheer amount of songs and poems in the book, but feel they are an absolute necessity to understand the lore of middle earth. they also provide a nice change to the flow. Great for long commutes
