Description

Wildly original, funny, and moving, The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August is an extraordinary story of a life lived again and again from World Fantasy Award-winning author Claire North.

Harry August is on his deathbed. Again.

No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message".

This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

Not really time travel

Harry is born, dies, and much to his surprise is born again. He is in the same place, same time, the same birth, the same circumstances, but as he reaches age 3, he remembers everything about his previous trip through life. It allows him to do something different. This allows the subsequent trips through life to be much more comfortable. If you know who won a particular sporting match that you could bet on, or a stock that was going to be hot or go under, you can quite quickly and early in life make enough money that you can do whatever you want. Oddly, on every trip through, events not involving you, are the same. WWII happens the same, the same races, games, matches are won by the same people.

It turns out there are other people like him, both that came before and that come after. Messages can be sent between the centuries by somebody who is young in talking to somebody who is old and about to die.

That is really the setup for this story. I can't do more without adding spoilers.

The narration is good. The narrators american accent isn't great but fortunately he only has to do it for a very short period. The story moves along very well. It spends some time giving you the setup, then the investigation and finally the nemesis. I liked how every move is considered as part of the long game. How Harry gathers information in one life, and in order to not draw suspicion upon himself, doesn't act on it until the next life. It some ways this book is reminiscent of "The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle"

A brilliant twist on time travel!

The story gripped me from beginning to end. Full of intelligent plot twists and stunning revelations until its inevitable conclusion. One of my new favorite science fiction books. Bravo Clair North! Peter Kenny brought a range of voices, accents and depth to the characters in the book that helped to immerse you in the world of the protagonist. Excellent work!

Surprised.

At the beginning I didn’t know if the story was going to keep my attention. With each chapter and progression in the intricate fascinating details, it made itself a book I couldn’t put down. I highly recommend the one of a kind novel, and the fantastic performance that made it pop.

Slow slow slow

An interesting premise and story but for some reason the author chooses to deliver it at a needlessly slow pace.

Interesting Concept and Well Executed

I really liked this book. Fresh take on Nietzsche’s curse/blessing of eternal return. Makes you wonder what you might do with endless life loops. Would you live for the moment and treat others as insignificant and pointless beyond your own gratification? Would you try to profit from your position? Learn all you can? Try to right wrongs or remake the world? Just live it over and over, or would you seek to end it all?

The writing is solid - not sure what others are criticizing in some of the reviews - and is exactly what I’d expect from the lead character. Though he us male, North’s female perspective I think lends a lot to the genre, development, and dialog.

The narration was great. He gives the right voice to the words. Just one thing to nitpick: the American accents were totally off and distracting. Thankfully, they are rare enough.

Great but leaves a lot of chekovs guns

it's a really cool idea that is generally well executed. except for the end way pulled out of seemingly nowhere. it leaves a lot of plot threads and sets up a lot of possibilities that are completely ignored.

Great narration to a compelling light sci-fi story

Ending dragged a bit but it was a great story with all the time lines interwoven beautifully.

The narrator was probably the best I've ever heard in an audiobook. Did each separate character wonderfully.

Good, but with minor issues

The performance was fine for the most part, but every now and again something just sounded off.
With story line itself, I felt as it lacked a little bit of punch, or tension, especially near the end. But considering the substance matter, I can see great difficulty with creating good tension.

All in all I still enjoyed my time listening to the first 15 lives of Harry August, I might recommend it in the future.

Thoroughly enjoyed

I usually only listen to audiobooks while driving. This one had me so caught up in it that I just had to listen to the last 4 hours at home on my couch. I simply couldn't wait to find out the rest of the story.
